Erickson, proprietor of Main street's deportment store, has a full- page Christmas ad in this issue. Mr. Erickson reports holiday business as very good so far this season and is looking forward to a busy week between now and Christmas. Some fine boxes of fruit have been received by relatives from Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Sayler of Belleview, Fla., who are spending the winter in the sunny southland. Large grapefruit, oranges and tangerines comprised the boxes and are delicious with the freshness of fruit ripened upon the tree. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 19, 1940) Appointment of Arnold J. Rauen of McHenry as manager of the National Youth administration resident work center fof boys at Mississippi Palisades State park, Savanna, was announced by Miss Marie A. Kirby, NYA director of Area No. 1, comprising 11 counties in Northern Illinois. Mr. Rauen comes to the NYA well qualified for his new position. Since July, 1987, he was assistant managing officer of the Illinois Sate Training School for Boys, St. Charles, in which capacity he had supervision at aO departments and procedures of the school, including personnel, vocational workshops, recreational and other activities of 700 boys. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of December 8, 1965) A new financial institution for McHenry is opening its doors Dec. 12. The McHenry Savings and Loan association is starting its business at a temporary location, 522 W. Main street, but expects to be in a newly constructed home of its own on West Elm street some time next spring. The association is organized to promote thrift and home ownership in the com- miaiity. It is the first one to recdve a charter in Illinois taxfter the new guaranty shares and loan and signed by the govetno* last July. Dr. Lee Gladatone of McHenry was named president of the Mdhnry County Medical society. Other newly elected officers include Dr. John McKenna of Cary, secretary. County squad cars were alerted after the First National bank of Lake Geneva had be4n relieved of an estimated $100,000. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 19. 1970) Following a lengthy discussion at a joint meeting of the boards of School Districts 15 and 186, each board voted to accept the resignation of Dr. Carl Bergstrom, superintendent, effective June 80, 1971. The board had met in executive session, after which Dr. Bergstrom addressed members in open session. The vote followed. Congressman Robert McClory announced that the Federal Water Quality agency has awarded a construction grant to the city of McHenry in the amount of $264,490 for construction of an additional sanitary sewerage treatment plant with improvements to existing facilities. Marian Central Catholic high school will remain open a minimum of four years following the present school year, August Uttich of McHenry, chairman of the Council of Administration, announced after a detailed study of the county-wide parochial school's situation. McHenry Man Applies For Judge's Seat A McHenry man his applied to fill a vacancy of associate judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit, which in­ cludes both Lake and McHenry counties. Frank J. Rhode, Jr,.of 1610 Cassandra lane, McHenry, applied to the Chief Judge of the Circuit, John J. Kauf­ man, to fill the position that was left when William D. Block was elected to the position of Circuit Judge last November. To date, there are 23 other applicants for the vacant seat.
