PAGE 4 - PLALNDEALER^TUEM)AY, DECEMBER U, ltM To Your Health A Service of McHenry Hospital Mounting pressures in our yoatb-oriented society are pushing the elderly out of the mainstream of American life. The traditional belief that mental powers decline is refuted by evidence which shows that most older retain intellectual ability through age 75 and beyond Mental impairment most often occurs due to physical ailments rather than loss of intelligence. The elderly are often accused of being unable to learn new things. Such reception by young people causes the elderly person to withdraw. Yet, the best way to en courage growth is to "exercise the brain". The ekterly, therefore, require opportunities where they feel comfortable in trying new things and expressing new ideas. Good health, too, must be maintained in order to enhance mental acuity. High blood pressure has been shown to affect the mental capability of people between the ages of 60 to 6®. High blood pressure that is treated allows the older person to retain his mental faculties as well as his healthy colleagues do. Inappropriate use of medicines is often a cause for confusion and mental deterioration in older per sons. Taking a medication because a friend found it to be helpful is a dangerous practice for anyone, but may occur more frequently as older people exchange symptoms of aches, ailments and illnesses. Living a,total healthy life from childhood on con tributes to the increased chance of a healthy old age. Improved nutrition, prevention of childhood diseases, better medical care throughout adulthood and moderate habits can effect a drastic change in the commonly held belief that life after 85 is plagued with physical ailments. Old age will not be a burden to individuals, families and society if we recognize that the mental capacity of elderly people offers much opportunity for capitalizing on their wisdom and experience. (This article is printed with the permission of the Council on Family Health and Carl Eisdorfer, M.D.) RJ STATE BOUNDARY Illinois Attorney General Tyrone C. Fahner has ad vised in a formal legal opinion that the boundary between Illinois and the State of Kentucky is the low water mark on the northwest side of the Ohio River as it existed in 1792. Fahner's opinion resolves the question of whether the boundary between the two states is the 1792 mark or the present day low water mark. Fahner's finding that the actual boundary is now somewhere within the channel of the river means that the Illinois Department of Conservation can enforce its regulations on the Ohio River governing such activity as licensing fishermen and registering watercraft using Uftaeis waters. ROBERT MUSIKSNTOW. Ph.D. psychologist for the Family Service end Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County (Editor's Note: This is another article in the Today's Psychology weekly series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. The topic this week is "Your Changing Moods".) Recently, with the coming of the winter months, I have been reflecting on the similarity between our emotional moods and the seasons of the year. At first glance, you may find yourself baffled by such an analogy. You may wonder to yourself what possible analogy can be made bet ween the seasons and our moods? What possible connection could there be? The connection lies in the fact that just as each season has its own individual beauty so can we learn to perceive the beauty in all our changing moods. In the springtime there is the joyous, uplifting feeling of life being renewed. With the increased warmth of the weather, leaves appear on the trees, flowers sprout from the earth, and one can hear the happy song of singing birds freshly returned from their winter hideaway. We appreciate the beauty of the earth. Winter has a totally dif ferent appeal. With the coming of cold arctic air the summer greenery disap pears. In its place is ice, snow and early darkness. Birds fly south and animals hibernate. There is a strange sense of solitude in the air which leads to withdrawal and reflection. One can also appreciate the beauty of the earth. In the same way that we appreciate each season, we can appreciate our changing moods. On some days we may feel like the springtime. We are energetic and hopeful, there is enjoyment in talking and relating to people. At other times our moods are more winterlike. Our energies may turn in ward and we are brooding and reflective. As winter must exist for there to be a spring, so too are there ~ up and down movements of mood. A person who is always cheerful and who has never experienced the beauty of solitude lacks a certain depth of character. On the other hand, a person who is always withdrawn has a heaviness to their per sonality which can be op pressive. To my mind a full human personality needs both. The up and the down, the dark and the bright, the heavy and the light, both polarities are necessary. Therefore jfcere is no need to light and Struggle against your moods. Just accept and appreciate them as part of what it means to be a full human being. Church Joins Move To Clean Up TV Programs The Church of Christ, 401 N. Oak street, Crystal Lake, has joined a nationwide movement trying to clean up objectionable programs on TV by refusing to buy products of companies advertising on those programs This movement has been spearheaded by the Church of Christ in Joelton, Tenn. This is not a boycott of products; rather, it is a resolution that members of the Churches of Christ will no longer let their money be used to support certain programs. Part of the purchase price of every product sold by the com panies is used to support what the church describes as "the immoral sex, violence and profanity on these programs". Churches of Christ are non-denominational, and participation in this movement is strictly voluntary on the part of each local congregation. Approximately 6,000 congregations of Churches of Christ are now participating. The Crystal Lake congregation joined the movement Oct. 5. Other religious groups and individuals in the area may be interested in joining this effort. If they would like a list of the specific products sold in America today by the sponsoring companies, write the Crystal Lake Church of Christ at P.O. Box 314, Crystal Lake.
