The General Accounting office has released an evaluation of the recent Selective Service draft registration. In summary, the GAO reports that the "draft registration is complete and accurate." The report verifies the Selective Service count of registrations on hand at more than 3.6 million, and affirms that Selective Service estimates of the probable registration population of. 3.88 million were "reasonable." Actual registration count, as of Dec. 18, was 3,681,700, or 95 percent of the eligible population. through statistically-valid sampling techniques, GAO estimates that fewer than 1,000 cards represent o b v i o u s l y f i c t i t i o u s registrations. GAO notes some errors in the file, caused largely by illegible entries on registration' forms. Many of these are being eliminated through an on-going error correction im, and the report Sets a "final accuracy /el" of 96 percent. The GAO also commented upon Selective procedures and upon demonstrated need for the registration program. In a covering l&ter of transmittal, GAO noted that "we were impressed by the thoroughness, completeness, and accuracy with which this program was conducted.
