Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of January 1, 1931) The Woodstock Evening Journal has quit as a daily newspapers t Woodstock and will hereafter appear as a weekly instead. The Journal was started a year ago by a group of Woodstock politicians and during the 1930 campaign had a pretty busy time of it in politics. After one year of existence the Jburnal now leaves the daily newspaper field at Woodstock to the Sentinel. Two daily newspapers in a town the size of wobdstock- has never been regarded as a possible success and the Question has been whether the Journal could drive the Sentinel out of the field. The local stores will close every evening, except Wednesday and Saturday nights, beginning Friday, Jan. 2, until June 1, 1931. The annual installation of officers, entertainment, dinner and smoker of McHenry Lodge, No. 158, A.F. & A. M., was held at the lodge rooms. The installing officers were Floyd E. Covalt and R. - G. Chamberlin. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Januaro 2, 1941) Hie final check-up at the McHenry post office revealed this week, according to Ray McGee, Gstmaster, that 37 aliens d registered at the po6t office under the Alien Registration act on or before the final day, Dec. 26. There were representatives of most of the European countries, including Sweden, Norway, Switzerland'* Germany and England. Seventeen members of the Class of 1933 of the McHenry Community high school held a class reunion at a banquet which was served in the Homestead tea room. Each guest was presented with a tea rose, the class flower. The committee consisted of Mrs. Bob Peterson, Evelyn Anderson, Marie Miller and Mrs. J. Eugene Sayler. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the flies of December 22, 1955) McHenry residents have the holiday spirit of cooperation according to Postmaster Ray McGee, who said this week that the assistance of the public has enabled the post office department to set an all-time high record locally. ' Two young McHenry servicemen have been highly honored in outstanding service Jn Vietnam. One of them, Capt. Mark A. Vycital, sor and Mrs. Charles W. Vycital, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross f o r e x t r a o r d i n a r y achievement. The coveted award was bestowed on the captain at Elmendork A.F.B., Alaska, where he is jr now serving with a unit of the Alaskan Air command. Private First Class Richard D. Tomlinson, son of Mr. ?nd Mrs. Lloyd Tomlinson, received tne Army Commendation medal recently while serving with the American division near Chu Lai, Vietnam. Pfc.
