Another new year's day- has come an' gone again in this century, an' as this granny reminisces, seems that th' exhileration we used t' know, wi' th' comin' o' th' new seasons hain't like it used t' be, Wi'%11 th' trials an' tribilations a goin' on, 'n on, th' world in such un certain circumstances, th' joys o' th* holidays seem hidden under a blanket o' apprehension. As this ol' lady sat alone, hopin' t' spend th' "Watch night", an' greet th' new yejur in', wi th' tube t' break , th' lonely hours, there wa'nt a single program in th' mid- ) west f r th' count-down. T' me own disappointment, an' many other lonely folk, th' only celebrations came from New York an' LasVegas. We wonder how we b'came second-class Americans in I960. Somehow, New Year's eve c'n be th' lonliest night o' th'year. Wi' Christmas eve.the'comin' day wi' family, th' last minute things t' be done, an' th' need f'r us elders t' get early rest, tides us o'er, but th' last night o' th' year hain't.so easy f r us, alone. So<manyjthings 're affectin' society these days, changin' traditional attitudes. We wonder how much we're affected by those who've migrated here, in recent time», those who've come t' share a "Piece o' th' pie", so's t' speak. Seems that many think our streets 're paved wi' gold, that we've b'come so rich that they c'n come an' take what they want an' change society t' their own style. We Americans, ha' always been a willin' t' help th' needy, at home an' far away, charity has been a by-word, but when our own people suffer through th' conditions o' th' day, unemployment at a peak, we're burstin' at th' seams wi' folks a needin' help. As th' new year b'gins, it's time t' take a big breath, git a good hold on th' boot straps, gi' a good yank, an' put on a happy smile, an' jist maybe, ye c'n put a little happiness in th' other feller's day. One day at a time, an' let th' next be th' best ye c'n make it, when it gits here. Let tomorrow be tomorrow, 'til it b'comes t'day. Ye ne'er c'n tell, it might be th' best day o' th' whole year. , t "Happy New Year", an' God bless one an' all. Grandma Radtke PAGE 3 - PLAINPEALER - WEDNESDAY.
