When it is flowering, there is nothing it can or should do than flower. And when it dies what else is there for it to do than die? VANews (Editor's Note: This is another article in the Today's Psychology weekly series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. The topic this week is "Conflict". For most of us, inner conflict is an almost continual part of our everyday lives. It seems as if • we are incessantly at odds with ourselves. Who we are never seems to be quite enough, so we expend our e n e r g i e s f i g h t I n g , struggling, trying to become something different than who we are at this moment. Yet no matter how hard we ^eem to struggle, we never . quite feel that who we are isk enough. There are fleeting moments of pleasure and satisfaction when we are able to achieve something, but these moments never last. When these moments have passed, we are left with our feelings of inadequacy. We may attempt to put on a show for the world that we , really are okay, and if we are good actors, there are , people around us who will believe our act. Inside however, we kriow that we are living a lie. The root cause of this incessant conflict is the idea that there is some other way that we are supposed to be other than the way we are right now. We have n u m e r o u s c u l t u r a l l y conditioned images, beliefs and ideals of the perfect person. We constantly compare ourselves to these images and therefore ) experience conflict. Conflict is thus the struggle between what is and our ideas of what should be. If you had no ideas of how you should be, you would experience j^ourself as perfect each 'moment. And the truth is that at this moment there is no other way you should be than the way you are. In fact, at this precise moment there is no other way you can be than the way your are. Therefore you are perfect This perfection however is not static. It is instead a growing perfection which is new each moment. A seed, for example, is a perfect seed. If placed in the proper environment, however it will perfectly begin to sprout. Eventually it will grow into a perfect flower. Finally as is the nature of flowers, it will wilt and die -perfectly! While it is being a seed, there is nothing it can or should do than be a seed. When it is sprouting, there is Editor's Note: Following are representative questions answered daily by VA counselors.
