FBI. As winter's chill descends v upon most parts of the country, homeowners from coast to coast begin their search for new and better ways to conserve heat energy. Today's homeowners can substantially reduce heat loss-- and cut down on heating bills-- by insulating certain key points in the home where heat either escapes or is inefficiently used. One such area is the hot water heater: the second largest energy in the home. By insulating the outer the heater, enough be saved to amount to a $45 savings each year. The reasons why The U.S. Department of Energy recommends adding ex- - ternal insulation to gas, electric and oil wateiraaters for the fol lowing reaspns: • The energy used to heat water in the average home is greater than the combined uses for lighting, cooking, refrigera- tion, television and air condi- ; tioning. • Virtually all water heaters 1 are manufactured with insuffi cient insulation. • An estimated 25 to 35 per cent of the total water heater operating cost is actually the , cost of energy which is used to replace heat lost as a result of a i poorly insulated tank. Not truetest Touching the outside of a water heater to feel if it is warm is not a true test to determine whether or not ihsulition is needed. DO YOUR HEATING BILLS have you In hot water? Maybe it's time you took a few steps to really cut down on your energy expenditures. In one easy step, you can increase the efflcienry of your hot water heater by insulating it against heat loss. This Thermo Saver® wafer heater insulation jacket meets Department ofEnergy standards for insulating all types of gas, electric and oil water heaters. j The surface temperature < standard electric water heater is about 85°F or 90°F, which will feel cool to the touch. At this .-temperature, however, the tank is losing energy at a steady rate. Ordinary Insulation inefficient Some homeowners attempt to insulate their water heaters with ordinary building insulation. Not only is this material ineffi cient, but the Department of Energy warns that, for reasons of safety, ordinary insulation should not be applied to gas heaters. They do, however, recom mend the use of specially de signed water heater insulation kits, such as Thermo Savef®, the original do-it-yourself water heater insulation jacket. <Sold and recommended by more than 50 public utilities nationwide, ilys patented jacket can be used to safely insulate gas, electric and oil heaters up to 24" in diameter. It consists of a 1V4" thick fiber glass insulation blanket faced With washable, fire resis tant vinyl; a 2" thick top plate; seam tape with specially formu lated adhesive; and diagrammed instructions for easy installa tion. Meets DOE standards Thermo Saver meets De partment of Energy standards, and retails at Sears Roebuck. JCPenney, Ace Hardware and other major hardware and home centers for about $20.
