1 Pfeper, Jakubicek Lift Johnsburg PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21,1981 The Johnsburg Skyhawks found out that they could win without much help from Rick Neiss Friday Night as they outscored Harvard 55- 52 in a Shark Conference battle. Neiss, averaging over 22 points-per-game on the season, had trouble hitting the net. He pumped in only 5 of 18 field goals and 2 of 3 from the line in collecting 12 points. The Skyhawks kept their composure after Neiss fouled out with 3:50 remaining in the game and with the help of 6 straight Tom Pieper free throws and 10 second half points by Frank Jakubicek, they came away with the victory. Pieper started the game as a one-man show, converting a rebound shot and swishing a 20-footer to give Johnsburg a 4-0 lead. Buckets by the Hornets' Paul Kramaczyk and Mike Shepherd knotted the score at 4-4 before 6'1" guard Steve Perenchio put in 6 unanswered points for Harvard to give his team a 10-4 lead. With 10 seconds left in the quarter, Chuck Novy put in a errant Rick Neiss shot and put the score at 14-19 going into the second period. Harvard hit an amazing eight of 10 field goals in the first quarter while Johnsburg suffered with 7 of 15 from the field. In the second period Johnsburg again got off more shots than Harvard (12 to 10), and converted on only five of them, but Novy and Neiss each hit two free throws which helped the Skyhawks cut the lead to only one at halftime, 28-29. Harvard hit only 3 of 10 and failed to get a shot off at the buzzer which aided the Grappler Split Matches A pair of matches was split last weekend by the Wrestling Warriors. On their home mat Friday, the McHenry varsity wrestlers lost to Dundee 22-36, but bounced back at Stream- wood Saturday with a 33-21 victory. Earning points for the Warriors in both matches were Steve Carby, Brian Wrona, Pat Haderly, Joe Mullen and Tom Ketchum. Carby earned forfeit points against Dundee and decisioned his Streamwood opponent 4-3. Wrona wrestled to a 3-3 tie on Friday and earned 5 team points with his 12-0 decision on Saturday. Two decisions, 7-0 and 5-2 helped Haderly raise his season record. Mullen also picked up two decisions, 8-0 and 7-2. Ket chum decisioned his Dundee man 10-7 and won by a forfeit at Streamwood. Also earning team points against Dundee was Vic Betancourt with a pin in 2:45. Additional Warrior points were given at Streamwood to Eric Kar- pinski and Mitch Ketchum through forfeits. Top season records to date among the varsity wrestlers are held by Wrona (21-2-1); Betancourt (14-4-1); Haderly (13-6-2); Karpinski (11-5); and Mullen (10-8). T h e u n d e r m a n n e d McHenry junior varsity lost both matches, 18-24 and 16- 42. Mike Love displayed his potential varsity strength with a fall and a 13-3 decision. Tom Kucek and Butch Sanchez each won forfeit points and a decision. A quick pin by Paul Voss also highlighted the J.V.- Streamwood match. Four of the five matches wrestled against Streamwood were won by Warriors. A 52-12 win and a 28-28 tie were earned by the fresh men McHenry wrestlers last weekend. Bob Hawley and Roland Hunt led the squad with two pins each. This Friday the local wrestlers travel to Crystal Lake South for another conference match. On Saturday they will face Lake Zurich and Mundelein Carmel in a double dual at Cary Grove. Lynne Sobczak r Skyhawk resurgance. Pieper was the only hot shooter for the locals, hitting 4 of 5 to tie Neiss for first half honors with 8 points. Neiss hit 3 of 11 from the field and 2 of 3 free throws in the first half. Frank Jakubicek came out after the intermission and took over as the team scorer as he put in shots of 12, 5 and 3 feet to keep things close at 36-37. Both teams traded bucket throughout most of the period as Johnsburg still trailed by one at the buzzer, 42-43. An omen of things to come started out the last period as Jakubicek continued his sharp-shooting and gave Johnsburg the lead, 46-43 on a 12-footer and 15-footer from the corner. The quarter dragged on as turnovers and fouls limited action around the net. Johnsburg took only 7 shots in the quarter while Harvard took only 5. With the score at 46-45 at the 3:50 mark, Neiss fouled out in a controversial scramble for the ball at half court. Har vard started to press full court and neither teafri could score until Chuck Novy put in a 15-footer at the 1:30 mark after about 15 deliberate passes. The margin increased to 48-45. Tom Pieper took over the rest of the way, stealing the ball in Harvard territory and sinking two foul shots after a Harvard time out. John sburg led 50-45. After Har vard carried the ball, the flustered Hornets fouled Pieper again at half court, and the sure-shot hit two more charity tosses to in crease the lead to 7 with 1:17 left in the contest. Ken Haideman brought Harvard back with a steal which resulted in a three- point layup, but then proceeded to help the Skyhawks by stepping over the free throw line during a charity shot and then fouling Pieper once more with 46 seconds left. Pie$>er hit two more free throws and Guetzloff put in the first end of a one-and-one to negate a layup by Haideman with eight .seconds left. John sburg came away with the three point victory. Pieper led Johnsburg with 14 points thanks to a 50 percent average from the field and^ perfect 6 for 6 free throw mark J Jakubicek tallied 12 withja 60 percent mark including 10 points in the second ham As a team, Johnsburg hit only 21 of 51 shots, but hit 13 of 21 charity tosses. Neiss ended up with 12 points on the day, while Chuck Novy had 8, Jeff Bartmann had 4, Gary Guetzloff had 3 and Rusty Beck had two. The win left Johnsburg with a 12-6 overall mark and a 4-2 record in the Shark. "So this is how you shop. Let your wife do the shop ping while you sit out herev" After a while I got tired of waiting and went in the store. "So -- your conscience bothered you", said the big man. _ Explained to him it wasn't my conscience and -- how could she leave me sitting out there in that hot car? That wasn't all of it. Our big friend met our neigh bors, Bill and Virginia Kreutzer, and told them about my problem. I thought they had mighty big grins as they came down the aisle toward me Shopping can be rugged in more ways than one Arnold Rauen arrived in McHenry last week from Florida seeking a warmer climate. "Do you remember the words to an old song about kissing her now?", the man asked Maybe. And. maybe some Old Timer can help. Try this on your ukulele: I wonder who's looking into her eyes Breathing sighs, telling lies. I wonder who's kissing her now. I wonder if she ever tells him of me. I wonder who's kissing her now. __ In professional athletics, we hear the edict "Play me or trade me". After a long-time-no-see, it was nice to meet Mrs. Joe Sutton and Mary Keerberg at Snug Harbor. Talk about a loyal reader! Mrs. Sutton's eyes are not so strong so she has somebody read S.I.H. to her each week. You have to love her kind. If the federal government is not running the show these days, who is? The top branch takes too much of our money in taxes, then gives some back. That is, they give some back if we follow their rules. When a federal judge tells parents they have to bus their children 15 miles to a school instead of having them attend a school in their neighborhood, it gets ridiculous. I truly enjoyed a visit to the home of Fred and Agnes Bienapfl. Returned a book and old picture last week and had a fun visit. Agnes grew up in the Tesch home which was purchased for use as the McHenry Library. The picture showed the quaint home when it still had a wood fence around it. Agnes was one of nine graduates of McHenry High in the year 1913. She and Genevieve Knox are the only ones still living. Fred gave me some issues of the "Good-Old Days" magazine to enjoy, then pass them along to Frank and Avis Gans. The hospitality in the Bienapfl home makes you look forward to a return visit. And -- let me tell thee, Fred concocts a great bowl of soup. FRANK JAKUBlCEK-scored 10 second half points, mostly from the outside like this one and helped the Skyhawks defeat Harvard, 55-52 Friday night in Johnsburg. The victory marked the second win over Harvard this year for the Skyhawks. ^ STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH To be present at the East Campus Rededication had to be a high spot in the lives of the large crowd gathered for the occasion on Sunday The school is beautiful Let us hope it is appreciated and used with pride Alvina wanted to see the library and had her eyes opened as she compared it with the limited area when she attended the school as one of the first class to enter the building in the fall 1924 ' For some of us the com parison was even more astounding Our library in the old school was no larger than a good sized clothes closet Nothing Beats A Hot Cup of of Tea on a Cold Winter Night!
