Navy Tenacity- From 1941 Legal Notice arv equipment Uiat deploys the target from the TA-4 airplanes he works with. If' Ron M. Romanelli of McHenry had to choose one word to describe the Navy's Fleet Composite Squadron One at Barhers Point, Hawaii, he'd probably settle for tenacity. The Navy air squadron was the first unit in Hawaii to get a plane in the air when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941 - an amphibious biplane painted a bilious green and orange and armed with a couple of very angry sailors toting Springfield rifles. Until recently, Romanelli was one of 225 members of the squadron which provides the loyal opposition for other Navy air and surface units needing to hone their combat skills. Romanelli, 25, was an aviation ordnanceman with the squadron - dubbed VC-1 in Navy parlance. He's the son of Mrs. Joanne Romanelli, 819 Royal drive, McHenry, and graduated from Foreman high school in Chicago in 1973. Romanelli recently left the squadron for schooling in San Diego and at Moffett Naval Air station near San Francisco. "I'll go to San Diego first for both land and deep water giir\rii/n) training/' hfc_gaid before leaving. "At Moffett, I'll spend 14 weeks of in flight training to learn the P- 3 weapons systems." The P-3 Orion is a sophisticated antisubmarine patrol plane, stuffed with electronic equipment to detect potentially hostile subs and carrying the weapons to destroy them if "Fortunately, I'll be returning to Barbers Point after qualifying in the P-3," Romanellis said, "and will be assigned to a squadron here." Romanelli spent over two years with VC-1, first as a night crew supervisor and then as assistant supervisor in the ordnance shop. Although his job was on the ground, he said it could be as exciting as zooming off into the wild blue yonder at times. "This is the last squadron in the Navy to fly all four kinds of aircraft," said Romanelli, a petty officer second class. "And, you have to know how to work on all of them." VC-1 has six A-4 Skyhawk jet fighters, an aging C-118 piston-engine transport, a P- 3 Orion turbo-prop and two SH-3 Sea Knight helicopters. Romanelli said the C-118 and P-3 are used primarily as communication and transport aircraft for Navy fleet commanders based in Hawaii, while the helicop ters provide a variety of services. "Duty with the squadron was enjoyable," said Romanelli, "but I wanted to get into the flying end of the business. As an air crewman in a P-3 squadron, I'll have that opportunity." Romanelli joined the Navy in December of 1974 and went through boot camp in Orlando, Fla. Before coming into the Navy, he earned an associate degree in elec trical engineering from the Cleveland Institute of Electronics. "I went through basic aviation ordnanceman school in Memphis after finishing boot camp in 1975 and then attended a school for air launched weapons the same year,u he said. Before reporting to VC-1, he spent almost three years aboard the carrier Midway and made two Indian Ocean deployments. "I enjoy living in Hawaii ... it's ideal for my off-duty interests. I like scuba diving and sky diving and I'm a four-wheel enthusiast and own a Jeep," he said. VC-1 is located at Barbers Point Naval Air station on the western tip of Oahu island. In contrast to the glamour and neon of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach some 30 minutes away by freeway, the air station is surrounded by sugar cane fields and small towns. It's the oldest active squadron in the Navy. It was formed in 1925 in San Diego as Utility Squadron One and was equipped with linen- covered biplanes. Besides the sophisticated aircraft, its people include some 50 Navy women in a variety of jobs. Two of the Navy's 14 combat jet qualified women pilots are also members of the squadron. "Women in the squadron is just fine with me," said Romanelli. "They're good workers." In fact, Romanelli is engaged to marry Sue Holmes, an aviation machinist's mate working in the squadron. Commanding officer of VC-1 is Cmdr. Robert E. Curtis, who made five combat tours to Southeast Asia as a carrier pilot. Shot down over North Vietnam on one mission, he evaded capture on the ground long enough to be picked up by an Air Force helo. History didn't record whether the two sailors in that green and orange biplane scored any hits on Japanese Zeros with their Springfield rifles during the attack on Pearl Harbor. But Romanelli likes to think they'd take pride in his old squadron, showing the same kind of tenacity today as it did on that Sunday morning 39 years ago.
