McHenry Girls Fall To Top Two' PAGE 1 - PLAINDEALER. WEDNESDAY. JANUARY I Playing the top two teams « in a conference within the span of two days is no easy feat. If you don't believe U ask Coach Pat Wirtz of the McHenry High girls' basketball team. Thursday night they ran into Crown, the top girls' team in the Fox Valley, and were soundly defeated 73 to 33. The Vikes used a full court press, were very aggressive and with their size controlled the boards throughout the game. - On Saturday afternoon the girls hosted the other un defeated team in the Fox Valley the Cary Grove Trojans. Playing inspired ball the first half, the Warriors grabbed a 24 to 21 halftime lead. But in the third period, foul trouble plagued the Warriors when Sue Haddick and Karen Karpavicius both went to the bench with 5 fouls. From then on it was all downhill, and two more Warriors fouled out in the closing minutes, leaving* Wirtz to play with just 4 players, and the Trojans emerged the victors 49 to 39. Plaindealer Six foot, three inch Jolene Bell led the Trojans with 23 points, and numerous rebounds, as the scrappy Warriors tried, but to no avail to stop the tall center of the Cary team. Tomorrow the Warriors host Crystal Lake South in another Fox Valley game. They needed more time, however, in dropping their conference record to 4-3 in a 57-55 loss to the conference foe. Although Johnsburg shot 42 percent from the field, the two Skyhawk big guns shot way below par. Rick Neiss could muster only four points on one of 11 field goals and 2 of 4 from the line, while Tom Pieper faired little better, hitting 2 of 8 from the Held and 4 of 5 from the charity stripe for eight points. Chuck Novy had 14 and Frank Jakubicek had 13 to help take up the slack, and the Skyhawks were only outrebounded by seven,33- 26, so it was hard to figure out why the locals lost. The big difference showed at the line. North Boone connected on 17 of 20 charity shots to go with 20 of 40 field goals. Johnsburg hit only 9 of 18 from the line. Coach Kies was miffed by his team's play. . "I can't say that we played terrible. We played good at times and bad at times," the coach said. "I suppose you could say we played in phases." Johnsburg did play a good second half, outscoring North Boone 16-10 in the third quarter and 16-14 in the final stanza, but it wasn't enough as Kies admitted that North Boone is a dif ferent team than he an- Wins 'Biggest Of Year' In a game that coach Hans Rokus teamed "the biggest win of the year," the Marian Hurricanes beat conference contender, M arm ion 59-58 at Woodstock Friday night. Marmion hit the hoop on six more field goals than Marian, but the difference came on the charity stripe, where Marian sank 15-21 and Marmion hit only 2-6. The game was close all the way. The Hurricanes led after one period, 13-10 and at half, 28-27 as Carl Brown did most of damage. Marmion came back in the third quarter, outscoring Marian, 16-10 and taking a 43-38 lead into the deciding quarter. Rokus credited the Hurricane full-court press in the fourth quarter in helping Marian to overcome the conference foe. "We threw the full court press at them on and off during the game, but it really puzzled Marmion in the last quarter," Rokus said."It was really a sweet win after losing to them earlier in the year by 18." High scorer in the victory was Carl Brown with 20, whUe teammates Kevin Noonan had ~13 and Jim MCHENRY COUNTRY CLUB "TWILIGHT DINNER HOUR" 4:30-7:00 EVERY WEDNESBAY I THURSDAY (regular Ming available 5-10) Mctamtarf*- *3M In! "They have two kids playing now, a 6' 6" sophomore named Tom Stines (four points) and a junior transfer Steve Merchitis (10 points) who helped out tremendously and made our job harder on the boards," Kies said. "We held their big man, Kramer to 10 points, but we had to shift our thinking with the two big men in there." Other Johnsburg scorers included Gary Guetzloff with 6, Russ Beck and Jeff c Bartmann with 4, and Scott Valentin with 2. Taking on Marengo (7-0 in the Shark) this Tuesday and Hononegah at home on Friday, Kies has all but conceded the Shark Con ference to Marengo. "Realistically, I don't think anyone expects Marengo to lose three games," Kies said. "I guess things are falling just about the way most of us (the coaches) predicted at the beginning of the season." Marengo is riding on a 15- game winning streak with a 7-0 mark at the top, while Hononegah, who beat South Beloit is tied with Johnsburg for second at 4-3, Harvard lost to Marengo and is in fourth place ahead of North Boone and South Beloit (2-5), while Beloit Catholic brings up the rear at 2-4. Joel Wakitsch EARL WALSH So 1 Hear Mayer had 12. Rokus was most pleased with the victory because the team did it without the help of Dan Roughan "Dan Roughan is out for the year with a torn ligament that he suffered against Marengo," Rokus sighed. "In fact we had only eight players at practice most of last week because of the flu." Marian did play rather sickly on Saturday as they travelled to Lombard only to take a whipping, 79-52, against Montini. "We just didn't have anything left as we ran out of gas ' after Friday's win," Rokus said. Marian was out of it from the beginning, trailing 20-12 after one, 38-27 at half, 46-37 after three and never coming close in the fourth quarter. For Marian, Carl Brown again led the scoring with 13 while Brad Gregory scored 12. Brown ranks as the second-leading scorer in the West Suburban Catholic Conference with 122 points in 6 games for a 20-points-per- game average. Shopping in a shopping center. Or shall I say sitting and waiting. Every store has a big sale sign. Seems to me there are more shoppers than packages. Music keeps floating through the air. Wish they would change the record. This is like listening to Jingle Bells over and over at Christmas time. The bench got hard so a short stroll is in order. Walked past a men's section where I wasn't going to buy anything. Dam sure when I saw a sale sign over some dull looking neckties -- only $9.99 -- some sale! An old geezer and his wife head for a bench. "Are you tired? ", said she. He answers "Naw" as he plop6 his hulk down on the bench. You could see the old boy had it, but wouldn't let on to the little woman. (I just sit and don't pretend.) Some shock as I entered the news room and saw Joel Wakitsch wearing a Cub hard hat on his head and a St. Patrick's Day pin on his chest. "Brenda", who is half Irish, but leans toward the German side, gave him the pin. It was just too much. Am anxious to read Dick Rabbitt's report on the Warrior 61-60 win over Crystal Lake South. Would have liked to have seen Gary Collins, coach of the South team. Hope to get back in the swing soon and see some games. The Fox Hole boys are hearing many descriptions of the shanty constructed over the entrance. Reminds me of the time a canopy was erected in front of the famous Karls Cafe. This column pinned the name "Canopy John" on the popular owner, and the late Tom Bolger (the druggist) saw to it that the name stuck. Neighbor Ford Hanford has been confined to his home this winter, waiting for his beloved Cubs to get back in action. Ford is getting a jump on the players who go to spring training next month. He's working out. Saw his wife pacing him up and down the driveway on sunny Satur day. Attending an Ecumenical Service at St. Mary's Church was inspiring. Looking at clergymen from many local churches of different denominations sitting side by side at the altar gave me the proud feeling of "This is America". Bimbo's was a - Buzzin Sunday night as the crowd watched and whooped it up while watching their favorites in the Super-Bowl football game. Told Gene Morenz, Ted McNish, Otto Larsen and others that the crowd and noise made it seem like Bimbo's of old. T-- Frank Rourke was thinking more of the fine weather and time to plant his tomatoes than he was of the football game. A high spot in the evening was a visit with Johnny and Cathy O'Leary. Time marches on -- Cathy is our niece and Godchild. Now she has a daughter in high school. In response to our question about a song, Mrs. Fred "Tinky" Meyers phoned to give me the words. I had left out part of the words. Of course she isn't old enough to remember the song. When she was a mere tot, she heard her mother sing it. Here it is: I wonder who's kissing her now. I wonder who's teaching her how I wonder who's looking into her eyes Breathing sighs, telling lies I wonder who's buying the wine For those lips that I used to call mine I wonder if she ever tells him of me I wonder who's kissing her now. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Bowling Scores McHenry Teacher's League What a contest for first place!! Ronnie's Rapettes had been in first place for the last seven weeks. It seems B. T. from that team is on a new diet. She can't weigh more than she bowls, so she should drop about 30 pounds. Pragmatic 10 team members scored two "fir sts". T. Rome marked in every frame of his first game and S. Peterson bowled her highest game ever - 183, almost 70 pins over average. The Pragmatic 10 really have their game together as they won the pizza for the fourth time. In other "firsts", N. L. of Who's Up said she couldn't bowl as poorly as she did last week. She certainly won't make it three weeks in a row! Hats off to S. Vitale with a 914, S. Blume with a 188 and M. Raasch with a 180. For the men. B. Doran led with a 199, J. Systma 191, B. Heneise 199, J. Golden 190. G. Vitale picked up the 5-10 split. Hurry back Karen You are missed (It took 3 of us to write this).
