With the score tied at 4-4, Johnsburg came up with three quick baskets, two long ones by Rick Neiss and a 15-footer by Tom Pieper. A Pieper steal and layup along with a nice three-point play by Chuck Novy upped the Skyhawk lead and the period ended with Johnsburg on top, 17-11. The Indians attacked Johnsburg in the second quarter , however, and they tied the game at 23 with a Kerry Garman layup at the mid-way point of the period. Trading baskets the rest of the period, Johnsburg had to come back with a five-foot jumper with Neiss before the buzzer to tie the game at 30 going into the intermission. To start the second half, Kies employed a 2-1-2 press to replace the 1-1-3 press used the first half. The Skyhawks also fried to confuse the Indians by utilizing a man-to-man defense instead of the usual 2-3 zone. Needless to say, the plan backfired. With eight, third-quarter points by Dunek, Marengo slowly pulled ahead as Neiss and Pieper tried to keep the Skyhawks in the game with 4 and 6 points,respectively. This quarter, Stock joined Mahon to lead the scoring attack, as they teamed up to score 14 of 16 last period points. With about 5:40 left in the game Johnsburg called a timeout trailing by 11 at 55- 44. Both teams played evenly throughout the remainder of the game as Marengo came away with the easy 71-58 victory. Johnsburg didn't do all that bad in the point department with Neiss scoring 20 points on 8 field goals and four free throws, while Pieper and Novy chipped in with 16 apiece. Other than that, however, Gary Guetzloff, Randy Wakitch and Jeff Bartmann could only muster two points apiece. Frank Jakubicek had trouble against the Indians,failing to tally and again blowing a few layups. For Marengo, Dunek had 20, Stock put in 19 and Mahon led all scorers with 21 points. With the conference title virtually out of reach, Johnsburg will have to battle it out for second in order to tune up for regional jhction. The loss dropped the Skyhawk Shark Conference mark to 4-4 and overall to 12- 8. The locals will take on Hononegah at home on Friday. The Warriors fresh from two victories last weekend at the expense of Crystal Lake South and Zion Benton would like to maintain their standings in the conference as they begin the second round. In the conference opener last Dec. 5, the Warriors with Bob Greve scoring a season's high of 30 points and Bob Zeller's 27 points defeated the Trojans 75 to 61. Tomorrow night the Warriors are back at it again when they invade Jacobs. The Golden Eagles of Ken Slimco were picked to give the Crown Vikings a run at the title, but as yet they have not shown any signs of challenging the Vikings. Hitting only 3 field goals of 22 total first half shots, Johnsburg watched as Marengo's Shelin Page and Beth Kanaly scored 10 and 9 points, respectively in taking a 23-11 halftime lead. Marengo, the biggest team in the Shark Conference was in control from the outset. Cheri Kofler of Johnsburg managed a- 10- footer at the 6:20 mark to get on the board, but by that time Marengo had already hit four buckets in a row. Johnsburg would not score again in the quarter and it ended at Marengo, 12, Johnsburg 2. Swishing three of four free throws, Inge Dschida cut the Indian Lead to 12-5 to start the second quarter, but much of the same prevailed as the Skyhawks committed three turnovers in a row, all of which were converted by Marengo. Sue Dehn and Dschida managed one field goal apiece in the first half shooting a combined 14 shots. Johnsburg decided to dominate the play in part two of the game, this half hitting 15 of 39 from the field, but they only took one charity shot in the whole half, a swish by Dschida on a technical foul. Sue Dehn figured out the tall Marengo defense in the second half, hitting five of 11, mostly underneath. Dehn continually used a good fake outside, combined with a quick step inside to free Dschida hit 4 of nine mostly from her favorite spot in the corner, but Jodi Hoch found a hot hand for Marengo with 8 second half points while Shelin Page and Beth Kanaly each added six more to their first half totals. After the Marengo defense bottled up Dehn underneath, Dschida came through in the late going with a driving layup and a long corner bomb to put Johnsburg within five points with 1:20 remaining. On the next play, however, Johnsburg put on a massive press and Kanaly snuck down court all alone under her own basket and put in a nonchalant layup to take the air out of John­ sburg. For Johnsburg, Dschida had 14, Dehn had 12, Kofler put in 8, while Theresa Hauck turned in 6 points and Joan Pierce added 2. A surprising statistic came out of the rebounding department, where the Skyhawks managed 28 while the mamouth Indians tallied only one more, 29. The loss put the locals at 1- 4 in conference action and dropped them below .500 overall at 5-6.
