Some 150 persons attended the Hillside meeting. The Council of Mayors, divided into 11 regions, represents the roughly 260 municipalities in nor­ theastern Illinois • Lake, McHenry, Cook, DuPage, Kane and Will counties. MFT revenues are an important source of funds for transportation in Illinois During 1980, for example, some $396 7 million was collected by the state, which uses its share primarily for highway maintenance. Some 60 percent of the MFT revenues are returned to the counties, townships, and m u n i c i p a l i t i e s , w h i c h depend on them to help pay for road repairs and other l o c a l t r a n s p o r t a t i o n projects. A percentage, or ad valorem, method would increase MFT revenues For example, if gasoline costs $1.30 per gallon, a 10 percent rate would increase the Chicago area's share by two- .. thirds. In 1978, the region received a total of $145 million in MFT funds so a t w o - t h i r d s i n c r e a s e Legal Notice represents a substantial amount of money for local transportation. Us function is to serve as a forum for deciding tran­ spor ta t ion issues and to coordinate p lanning. A major MPO responsibility is the Transpor ta t ion Im­ provement program, a list of transit and highway projects developed annual ly in conjunction with regional officials and transportation opera tors The federa l government will not provide money for any project not included in this program.
