Hurricanes Drench Two WSCC Foes PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 11.1981 In an effort to leave a lasting impression on the West Suburban Catholic Conference before joining the Shark next year, Marian Central upset Immaculate Conception and Driscoll in two weekend road battles. Marian had everything working against them in the I.C. game as the conference foe came into the game with a 13-5 record, a first place S- 2 conference mark, and riding /< winning streak. an eight-game winnir _ The Hurricanes took a 30- 22 lead at halftime against I.C., who had beat Marian earlier in the year, 56-48. "We played the best two quarters of man-to-man defense that I can remember," Coach Hans Rokus said. The tide started to turn as I.Ci led 45-40 midway through the third. Maqan cracked away at the lead and trailed with seven seconds remaining, 51-50. Carl Brown was fouled on a shot and put in two free throws to give Marian a 52-51 lead. After I.C. missed a 10- footer at the buzzer, the Hurricanes held on to a one- point victory. Carl Brown scored 28 in the contest to pace Marian. Trailing to Addison on S a t u r d a y , M a r i a n remembered the 61-60 dumping that they took at the hands of Drisoll earlier in the year. The locals played to a 32-30 lead at halftime, but as against I.C., Driscoll surged to a 66-56 lead with only three minutes left in the game. All the Hurricanes did after that was to outscore Driscoll 16-0 in the last minutes to record a rousing 794W5 victory. Again Carl Brown led Marian, this time with 34 points, which helped the Hurricanes to even, 6-6 mark in the WSCC and a 11-9 overall record St. Edwards and Rockford Boylan will invade Wood stock Friday and Saturday to take on the host Hurricanes Joel Wakitsch EARL WALSH' So I Hear It was a jolly crowd at the Fox Hole as each one took a verbal shot at Evo. It all came about after reports of the City Council meeting in which the new addition to the pub entrance was discussed. Some thought the discussion was in poor taste, but saw the funny side as kidding got into full swing. One thought it should be named "Evo's Little House on the Prairie". Another came out with "It's Only A Shanty In Old Shanty Town." Larry Nimsgren recalled in some detail the little house out back instead of out front. The William Weylands enjoyed every bit of the discussion. One bright thought was to put a telephone in the new addition and call it a booth. It was agreed that the uupi GVciTiciit kept the snow and ice from the cement steps and might save a serious fall. And -- it concluded with the thought that the City Council gave the establish ment more advertising than they could buy. - During a time out in a basketball game, the TV announcer stopped, men tioned the coach in a huddle with his players and said. "Now let's listen to what he has to say". That's wrong. What the Coach has to say is nobody's business. It is between the coach and his team. He certainly wouldn't want the opposition to hear his strategy. Reading that we follow the fortunes of Ray Meyer's DePaul team rather closely, Larry Huck brought us a program from one of the games. It isn't a cheap program by any stretch of the imagination. Have enjoyed the information on each player. Larry and his son, Lawrence, have followed the DePaul team for a long time and attend many games Feb. 4,1981 "Dear Earl: "I know you probably don't want to start an Old Time Song section in So I Hear, so here goes with "Baby your mother, like she babied you" etc. "That song must be 55 to 60 years old - so here are the words: Baby your Mother, like she babied you back in your baby days. Maybe your Mother is lonesome and blue waiting for you and needing you too The debt of Love you owe her. you can never pay, go take her in your arms and kiss her tears away. And Baby your Mother like she babied you back in your baby days. "The above is strictly from memory. "Regards, "Norm Hoym" Feb 5,1981 "Dear Earl, "Here are the words to Baby Your Mother: When you were a baby Two arms held you tight Rocked you to sleep every night. Those two arms are empty now. Lingering day by day. Why don't you go home and stay? Baby Your Mother like she babied you Baefc in your baby days. Maybe your Mother is lonesome and blue crying for you and needing you too. For those years of wat ching o'er you You can not repay Go take her in your arms And kiss her tears away. Baby Your Mother, like she babied you Back in your baby days. Such a beautiful old song. "Regards, "Juanita" Thanks to both of you. Norm and Juanita. That should take care of old songs for a while. Something else will pop up. We hope. It is encouraging to get response from readers. This one may be going around the second time, but it still hits my funny bone: An old gentleman was riding in an airplane for the first time At Phoenix, Arizona, the plane made a beautiful landing, and im mediately a little red wagon rushed up to refuel it. The next stop was Fort Worth, Texas, and again a little red wagon rushed up. The same thing occurred in Nashville, Tennessee. A fellow passenger said to the gentleman, "These planes certainly make wonderful time." the old man replied, "That little red wagon ain't doing so bad, either." The Uplift Howard Snyder goes back a long way in memory of sports events. Met him at the McHenry Hospital annual dinner Saturday night. Howard was recalling the 1918 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Boston. He says they moved the series from Cubs Park to the White Sox park where there was more seating capacity. . Howard remembers the first game in which the Cub's Hippo Vaughn and Boston's Babe Ruth were the pit chers Ruth beat Vaughn 1-0 before the huge crowd of 19,274 people The winning player's share in 1918 was $1,012.51. The losers took home $671 09 Howard remembers look up such things I The McHenry Police Association musical went over big Sunday afternoon. Just when I was thinking Lawrence Welk could use some of those outstanding musicians. Bandleader Bill Toplsen asked if there were any Welk fans in the crowd There was one, for sure So he came through with one of 01' one - a - two - a s numbers All who participated, the Stage Band, the Kranz brothers, the entire police department and many others are to be commended. They went all out to help the youth of our community. Kim Smith and MHame Smith Shark Dwindling In a meeting of Big Nine Conference principals last Monday, Shark Conference school, Honongegah out of Rockton was accepted as the newest entry and will join the Rockford-based con ference in 1982-83. If the Shark cannot collect any new members, the 1982 season would feature only Johnsburg, Marengo, Harvard and Marian Central in the Shark. Marian will start play in the Shark next fall. Other schools already leaving the conference next year include North Boone, South Beloit and Beloit Catholic. They will all join the new Trail Blazers Conference next fall. Up to now, Hononegah has been the only Class AA school in the Shark and will join nine other Class AA schools after next season The Rockton school is ex pected to have full con ference schedules in 1982-83 in all sports except football. Bowling Scores McHenry School League 2-4-H1 Well, the flu and such took a toll this week and there were almost more missing than were bowling Since I was a victim of the flu. I can't tell if the change in standings was due to illness and accidents, or just dif ferent bowling I hear trom one of my team members 1 should stay home more often, but 1 won't comment on that.
