FEBRUARY 20,1161 ra es Told FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 19, 1931) Readers of the Chicago Daily Tribune have no doubt been interested in reading articles pertaining to cooking written by Miss Angela Petesch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. H. Petesch of Oak Park, former residents of McHenry Miss Petesch is an assistant to Meta Given, head of the Tribune department on cooking. Her contribution to that section was an in teresting article on cocktails, concluding with a recipe for clam juice cocktail. Hampered to a great extent by the epidemic of grippe that has invaded this community of late, the MCHS cagers went down to defeat before Crystal Lake for the first time this season. The final score was 16-15 and the loss drops McHenry from further competition in the country tournament. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 20, 1941) When the weather man came around Feb. 16, in the guise of a blizzard, local folks buttoned up their overcoats and prayed that the storm would not result in a repetition of the scenes in this vicinity just five years ago. The snow, which fell steadily all day, was ac companied by a gale which contributed to make the out of doors miserable. Although only four or five inches of snow fell, the fluffy particles were Diled into drifts or One-to-one service from Sentry Life Insurance- See me for personal service designed to meet your individual life insurance needs Including: Mortgage protection. Since there are 1,696 people within the city limits of McHenry, this shows that 2,014 are living in rural areas. Most of these reside near the lakes or along the river in this township. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of February 16, 1956) Miss Peggy Whiting, Miss Joann Hughes and Miss Arleen Neckerbecki were among a class of 43 students to receive their caps after having completed five months of freshman training at St. Therese Hospital School of Nursing, Waukegan. This was the first time in the history of St. Therese School of Nursing that two former graduates had daughters following their career in the same school. Mrs. Whiting was asked to cap her daughter, Peggy, and Mrs. Celia Dargis of Waukegan capped her daughter, Alice. At a meeting of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, it was voted by those attending to present a check for fifty dollars to Harold Aim in recognition of past service to the com munity as chief of police. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 17, 1971) It was learned with much regret that McHenry high school is losing one of its most respected faculty members to retirement. When "Mac" McCracken closes the door to his beloved athletic room early next June, it will mark the end of the "old guard" of teachers who accumulated an im pressive record of long service to McHenry young people. For the first time in at least two years, McHenry high school's West campus has a senior who has achieved finalist status in the National Merit Scholarship program. He is Lawrence E. Dresdow, 17. Looking to the future needs of young people in the Johnsburg area, a citizens' advisory group in District 12 has been meeting regularly in recent months to for mulate school plans. The McHenry Warriors were forced into overtime before coming home with a big victory at the expense of the Blue Streaks of Wood stock in a thrilling 54-53 contest. Thompson reported that the Illinois Department of Public Aid collected more than $1.35 million in child support payments in Jan. 23 percent more than a year ago. Thompson attributed the improved collection rate to such factors as increased public support for child enforcement programs, a get-tough stance in the courts and use of collection methods similar to those utilized in the private sector. The Depository Institutions Deregulation Committee, recently set up by Congress to supervise interest rste questions, has been asked by the American Banker's Associstion to cresta a new type of savings account u> certificate which ' would strike s happy balance. They have requested s deposit account which would give customers a higher yield than savings accounts but with greater liquidity than money market certificetes. If approved, the plan would call for a new account which wold probably require a $1,000 minimum balance, possibly redeemable after 30 to 00 days and s market- determined rate of interest.
