V "EARL WALSH' 80 I Hear You can't beat thoughtful friends. Now comes a clipping from the Chicago Sun-Times with bold head: "HATS OFF TO BALD NESS -- IT MAY INCREASE VIRILITY." It's a doozey of an article by William Bfaden. Of course, there was no signature, but a notation read: , To: Earl From: A Rotary member with good looks, charm and hair. I've looked over the membership list and can't find one who meets that description. I missed the meeting last week. Maybe they took in a new member. It was a real surprise to receive a phone call from Ken Espey, former McHenry Police Chief, from Florida. It was last week when we had heavy snow and low temperatures. "How's the weather up there?", was his question. He knew dam well what our weather was like up here. He can read - and those Florida newspaper play it up big. * Asked him about the widows down there, but didn't get any information Saw a very special looking car rolling along the high way and was told I could buy one like it for 35 thousand dollars. And to think there was a day when I said I wouldn't pay 5 thousand for anybody's old house. Wonder if you could build a 2-car garage for that amount today. TTiere is a certain amount of pride in giving another car driver or jaywalker a break. A wave of the hand to say thank you is gratifying. Have been keeping count lately and find that only one out of six give us a wave. Not much of a batting average. Top college basketball teams are finding smaller schools pointing for a chance to knock off the giants. Some are coming mighty close. Don't know how I missed, but Margaret Bauer v of Woodlawn Park and Martha Freund of Johns burg died and were buried before we heard the news. Both were fine ladies and good friends. Super Bartender Cliff, who has been a popular fixture at Snug Harbor for more years than many can remember, it another loyal White Sox fan. If I'm not mistaken, so is his friendly wife. Recently we heard people say, "Tell us again about the feuds between sections of McHenry in earlier days. Some are doubting Thomases. They can mark it down that Boone Creek was the dividing line. West McHenry was known as Gage town. George Gage owned property in the area and is said to have been instrumental in having the railroad built through there. The East Side had Cen- terville (Green St.) and Old Town (Riverside Drive.) Before McHenry became a city May 15,1923 the officials were elected at large. Three wards were defined when the village became a city. There was an unwritten law that the Village President be elected from the East Side one tenp, then from the West Side at the next election. i- This is old stuff to the few remaining old timers, but comparative newcomers seem interested in learning about McHenry. One person laughed at the story if you crossed Boone Creek from your own territory you had better have your troops with you. If you were alone and somebody yelled "Over- cricker", you stood a good chance of getting messed up. Of course, there were no weapons as gangs carry in larger cities today. How well I remember going to old St. Patrick's Church on Court St., North of Washington, on Saturday mornings for catechism instructions. It was real punishment to have to give up Saturday mornings for those religious instructions. My father's instructions were to walk north on Green St. to Washington, then one block east to Court St. * On one Saturday morning, I reached Pearl St. and saw a ball game going on in the park. Couldn't resist ambling over. Trouble was I never reached the park. S o m e b o d y y e l l e d "Overcricker". Wow! Was wearing a white shirt that was torn and no longer white when I went back home looking for sympathy. That's what I tought. My father reminded, "I told you what to do and you didn't do it. Now take your trimming. I don't feel a d-- bit sorry for you." At one time there were twelve saloons in the small town and discussions arose as to the number to be allowed on each side. During World War One, they staged benefit baseball games with out-of-shape businessmen participating. You guessed it! It was East Side vs. West Side. It was a small, log building near the present site of the Riverside Hotel. History tells us the Post Office was moved to the West Side when the railroad came through. What history doesn't record, but Old Timers swore was the truth - the little building was moved bodily during the night. To solve the problem, two separate post offices were established. All that was necessary in addressing a letter was to specify either McHenry or West McHenry. No house numbers. The P o s t m a s t e r s k n e w everybody, their horses and their dogs. That's enough.
