STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Musicians In Fox Valley Festival On Monday, Feb. 23, Woodstock high school hosted one of the Fox Valley conference's most en^ tertaining and rewarding activities, the third annual Fox Valley conference choral festival. This concert was the culmination of an entire day's experience for the 400 vocal music students representing nine schools in the conference. Choral students from both McHenry East and West campuses participated in the festival. The Fox Valley conference choral festival is designed to provide the students with an enlightening educational experience that utilizes skills developed by the vocal music programs of each school The FVC choral directors meet and select the music which they feel will be challenging to the students and then choose a director who will lead the students through the festival day's activities. This year's director was Kurt Chalgrin from Tremper high school in Kenosha, Wis. Under his direction, the students rehearsed com­ positions by J. S. Bach, Franz Liszt, Anton Bruckner and Eugene Butler. This variety of music was enhanced by the use of different types of choirs. The students performed as a mass chorus and as separate girl and boy choirs There was also a mixed honor choir comprised of the eight best choral students from each school. Chalgrin shared his knowledge of music with these students including the joy that music can bring to everyone. Zwick Asks Separation Of RTA-Road Package State Rep. Jill Zwick (R- Dundee) has called for an immediate end to all diversions from the State Road fund for non-road uses. "If the funds that have been diverted from the road fund had been used to maintain and upgrade our roads, we would not be in the situation we now find our­ selves in concerning needed road work", she explained. In fiscal 1979, $171,000,000.00 was diverted to everything from the Secretary of State's office to the Department of Aeronatics, to Public Transportation. In fiscal 1900, these diversions will be reduced to $120,000,000.00 and all diversions will be phased out by 1964 - but we need immediate relief from this jjflusti< proposals to the gas tax to support R.T.A. are not needed and will not be supported by me!" Rep. Zwick said. "I don't believe the popular government theory that spending more money on something automatically remedies the problems - it doesn't. The current structure of the Regional Transportation Authority is not effective and inefficient and must be changed. The failure of the R.T.A. to respond to our areata needs is intolerable. I will support the involvement of the private sector in public transportation. There is a need for efficient ser­ vice, particularly in the business community, and the private sector of business could make it a profitable endeavor." Only 13 percent of the seven-million persons living in the six-county R.T.A. area use public tran­ sportation and of this, in the suburbs (which contain half of the population) 6.6 percent of the people use public transportation. The average operating subsidy now amounts to $57 a year to each individual living in the R T.A. area. Mrs. Zwick stated, "If mass transit is to survive, it must be offered at a price which is competitive with private auto operation." In conclusion, Rep. Grenman, of 1414 Orchard Beach, McHenry, was one of 225 students in the military base degree programs offered at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, (SIUC) to make the fall semester Dean's List. Grenman maintained a "straight A" average throughout the Fall semester. SIUC offers occupational degree work at more than 35 military bases throughout the country. RECEIVE DEGREES Some 400 students received degrees from Marquette university this winter. Among the graduates were G. David Gerrard, 2308 Fairview lane, and David Welter, 3813 Grove avenue, both B.S. PAGE 3 Sunnyside Area Betty Messer Hold Second Area Meeting On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the village held its second monthly meeting at the Johnsburg Junior high. Among the topics discussed was the ap­ propriations for the coming fiscal year 1981-82. This must be completed before the April election. One item in the appropriations is money to do road work in the older section of the village where roads are badly deteriorating. It is hoped that there will be sufficient funds to complete the interior of the village hall this year. Once completed the village will hold its meetings in the hall. Also, the clerk and chief of police will maintain offices in the hall. At the present time the squad is housed in the village garage. A decision will be made at the next meeting on granting Mr. Mitchell a business zoning for a portion of his property that fronts Wilmot road. At present his property is zoned for farming and he has asked for the business zoning to operate the Weiner Wagon which, Mitchell purchased last year. DEADLINE PAST The deadline for displaying the current village stickers was Feb. 1. A number of residents still have not purchased them and the police are now issuing tickets to those in violation.
