Your Police Department by Officer Jim Fitzgerald * * * The McHenry Police Officer's association of your Police department is very grateful to everyone for making our first community concert the success that it was. It helps us make it possible to continue our efforts to make the children of the area aware of what a great area they live in. The money raised will go quite aways toward our bowling league, pigtail baseball team and High School Senior scholarship support and sponsorships. A fine time was had by all those who attended, and the bands were their usual outstanding selves. Also, because those at- Public Relations Officer McHenry City Police Phone 385-2131 tending frequented the Booster club's snack stand, thpv wprp able to raise some funds for their efforts. We hope to see more of you there next year to join us in the fun. A couple of short items .... You should know that your McHenry City vehicle stickers are due now, and should be in place on your windshield. We are now issuing tickets for not having your city vehicle sticker, and the ticket is good for a $10 fine at first, $15 after 48 hours, and $20 after 72 hours, besides having to still buy the city sticker. , / Through Sinai Desert (This is the third in a series of articles by Hugh Kirk on his experiences while travelling through Egypt). "The Egyptian trip along the Nile had a lot more for us to see than I have time to tell. Therefore, let us travel east through the desert and finally see a few palms and a little scattered vegetation. Sometimes even a house of sorts or a shack and now just ahead a small steep hill. When we get to the top of it, utter amazement -it's the Suez Canal out in the middle of nowwhere. "We spent a good deal of time on this hill, really a ridge. We have to because there is no way to get across. There is a road built on this ridge and a very good irrigation canal as well. "After much waiting we go north along the Suez until we find a bit of a landing and here we wait for hours until a raft parked there all the while is negotiated to take us across On the other side is nothing, not even a ridge, just a tent and a place in the sand they have used as a road away from the canal I should tell you the ocean going vessels passing through the Suez were very interesting. "Ahead of us is sand and nothing but sand for miles and miles for this is the Sinai desert. Occasionally we'd see shot up wrecks of tanks left from the war with Israel. "East of the Suez, con tinuing our trip, we see an occasional oasis with palms and a few bedouins' tents and camels. "We are stopped frequently to pass through check stations - soldiers on guard out in the 'nowhere' of the desert. Sometimes if you are alert you can see tanks poised and ready to go. They are away out in the hills of sand at different distances. The check stations are two or more rows of puncturing spikes across the road. They are staggered so that unless you are travelling about 2 miles an hour you are not going to be travelling at all. "Many, many miles ahead are a few small buildings and a few motor cars and lots of push cart people and a few donkeys. When we get close enough we find out this is the present border with Israel. We feel lucky we've made it while they are still open for they are only open a couple of hours a day and these times are very irregular. "After about 24 hours of baggage inspection and visa and passport inspection the soldiers let us pass into the 'no man's land' which is a great distance of neutral territory to the Israel bor der, where the whole operation starts all over again". Lions Club Sponsor Circus Performance For the senior citizens, it's a chance for an outing, a time of good times, a time to forget poor health or steadily advancing years For the children, it's a chance to build happy memories and realize that someone cares. For both groups, it's just plain great fun when the 102 Lions clubs in Chicago's District 1-A (one of 12 Lions districts in the state) sponsor matinee per formances of the Medinah Shrine Circus with 5,000 blind, deaf, and physically handicapped children and 1,000 senior citizens as their guests. Performances begin at 1 p.m. March 2 and March 3. Monday's performance will be for the children, who will begin arriving around noon. Meeting the dozens of buses outside the Medinah Temple, 600 N. Wabash Ave., will be members of Chicago area Lions clubs, who will see to the children's needs. Lions also will be on hand to help the senior citizens, who will begin arriving around noon March 3 for the 1 p.m. performance that day. Own a 4-Wliaal Drivo Thick? Own a 2-Wheel Drive Thick? So, hop on down to City hall, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon and get the sticker right away. Also, check your lic ense plates _for an expir ed yearly sticker, as some of them expire starting the end of this month. The new year stickers are available at the usual places in town. Failure ft© obtain the new sticker means a $35 ticket, besides having to still buy the sticker, After two years of this column, I finally met the S.I.H. columnist, Earl Walsh, last week. Seems we both read each other's ar ticles, and we agree that's one apiece for each of us. This young man, a wealth of McHenry history hidden under his fedora, is as nice as everyone tells me, and one day we agree we'll have to sit down together and swap stories and in formation. See you soon! Reservations for the special program on "Keys to Anhydrous Ammonia Safety" are being accepted at the McHenry County Farm bureau, Mrs. Carolyn Lillegard said. The program will be held on Feb. 28 at the Farm Btfreau building, Woodstock. Mrs. Lillegard, chairman of the Farm Bureau Women's committee, said the program will stress ways to prevent accidents from occurring when farmers use this plentiful form of nitrogen fertilizer. The meeting is open to the public, she said, because of the importance of people becoming familiar with the dangers of anhydrous am monia. "Though fanners are in closest contact when they apply it, many are in the vicinity of its use and may be nearby when an accident occurs. The knowledge of the things to do~and not do-can be life-saving," she sum marized in urging public participation in this free c o m m u n i t y s e r v i c e program. She stressed that statistics show that victims of this type accident are often people who are familiar with the dangers. "We need farm people to attend in order to review safety precautions, because obviously the instruction is not making sufficient impact to avoid many tragic ac cidents," she continued. "People too often disregard safety precautions." John Scott, safety specialist, will present the program. He'll include a film furnished by Country Companies, "Handling Anhydrous Ammonia Safely". The program begins at 10 a.m., pauses for the free chili luncheon and concludes at 2:30 p.m. PAGE 21 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY.
