Ph.D. psychologist for the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County (Editor's Note: This is apother article in the Today's Psychology weekly series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers The topic this week is "Dare To Be Different" ) In a world which places a high value on conformity, it is often difficult to take an unpopular stance. It's hard to see things from novel perspectives and to give yourself permission to act on what you perceive to be true. It feels so much safer to stand on the solid ground of a ccep tab l e be l i e f s and tradition. To be creative, however, is by definition to be different. This willingness to be different is not the same as rebelling just for the sake of rebelling. To do the opposite of what is considered the norm is not freedom. If you feel that you must act dif ferently than the norm no matter what it is, you are not making a free decision. You are still basing your decisions on what other people do rather than con sulting your own inner thoughts and feelings. What you are doing is conforming to an idea that you must always be different. To dare to be different requires the ability to question and to think for yourself. There must be the Willingness to question beliefs and traditions. You must learn to hold your ideas up to the clear light so that they can be examined to see if they hold value. There must be the willingness to let go of the past so that you can see things anew What was appropriate at some time in the past may no longer be appropriate to the current situation. Above all there must be the courage to be different. Yes, there is, especially in a situation where a wife has just started work, or returned to work in order to help out. That hazard is the temptation to build up too great a debt load.
