Alderman Liz Nolan, co-chairman of the McHenry Beautification committee and Genevieve Marrow, president of the McHenry Garden club, as they select plants for the outdoor planting program to start as soon as the weather permits. - STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Christmas trimmings are barely out of the house when visions of pansies, petunias and poppies spring into mind. Planting time is just around the corner and plans for beautifying McHenry are again under way T h e M c H e n r y Beautification committee, which blossomed ,nto being last year, is at it again with dreams and plans for a prettier McHenry. One of the first steps in the plans is a general meeting to be held at city hall council cHam bers, for all who are in terested in sharing ideas for beautifying the city The meeting will be held Tuesday, March 10, at 8 p.m., and an invitation to attend is extended to all who are interested. The committee started last year with a few simple ideas to lift the face of the city by placing over a dozen planters at different locations around town. On planting day. with a Spring rain falling, numerous Girl Scouts and Brownies, under the direction of garden club members, lovingly planted lit?'e green sprouts that developed into colorful blossoms. Throughout the summer, weeding and watering of the plants was tended by (he girls for the pleasure of the community. \ gift of trees from local citizens added to *he per manent beauty. Early in the Spring, ovfer a dozen tre^s of different varieties were donated and planted at Petersen park by the Telephone Pioneers. The Weakman family provided a stately pine which graces the triangle at routes 31 and 120. A beautiful blue spruce from Mrs Panconen serves as the official < hristmas tree in the Pearl street park Other lovely specimens include one in the Green street parking lot from Mrs Kate Weber; two at the entrance to Petersen park from Mayor Stanek and Dennis <ierstung; and one from Frank Kurth which stands near-the park ;<rea of Whispering oaks It is the hope of the Beautification committee that this sense of community pride will be exhibited further in 198(1 for the en joyment of all the residents of McHenry and those who visit the city.
