Barbara Harris A successful rock composer-singer finds money doesn't answer all of life's ques tions (2 hrs.) 0 News FA<M17 A moniker for the marquee from Brian Robinette Burbank--Taurean Blacque, who plays the hip, compassionate undercover cop, Detective Neal Washington, on NBC-TV's new humorous police drama series, 'Hill Street Blues' (Saturdays), shrewdly chose his present moniker with an old-time press agent's instinct for its eventual head-turning marquee value. "Taurus is my sign," he explained. "So that's how I got 'Taurean.' I'm black, but I wanted to spell it different ly, like b-l-a-c-q-u-e. It looks good on a billboard --at least it looks better than Herbert Middleton Jr. I didn't want to be called 'Herbie' all my life." Blacque was born and raised in a "blighted section of Newark, N.J., one of four children living with their divorced mother. He at tended Arts High School, a college prep school for art and music students, where his classmates included Gerri Grainger and Melba Moore. He originally planned to become an artist, but aban doned those career blueprints to take a job as a post of fice carrier and driver, a job he held for about 10 years. Afyer a friend convinced him to enroll in an acting school, the Arperican Musical and Dramatic Academy, Blacque got his first part in a New York play. In 1972, he left New York opting for the tranquil pace of the Virgin Islands ("I had to air things out"), and returned 18 months later. With the help of fellow thespian Dick Anthony Williams, a newly-confident Blacque made his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of 'River Niger.' Blacque found frequent work as an extra in the New York-based television series 'Ball Four.' When it was cancelled in 1976, he flew out to Los Angeles and found enough lucrative guest roles in TV ('Snip,' 'What's Hap pening') to justify moving out permanently in early 1977. Blacque sees his character of Washington as shar ing similarities with himself. "He's divorced and has two kids--like me," he said. "He's sincere about his work. His children and his job are most important to him. To be an undercover cop means he's come a long way, and he's not about to blow it." TV COMFUIOG scevicts.
