On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt A couple of unknown teams from the unknown suburbs of the big city, didn't do too bad in basketball this season. Both the Crown Vikings and the Woodstock Blue Streaks reached the sectional finals, before they fell by the wayside. And another unknown, Antioch, is playing in the Supersectional tournament. the Crown Vikings lost to Palatine 49-46 in the Fremd Sectional, and like DePaul had a lead in the final period. The Blue Streaks lost to Antioch 41-35, after defeating the state's 5th ranked team, the East Rockford E-Rab. Rockford sportcasters and writers still haven't figured {his efts out. Don't worry about the early date, the Warriors have played earlier in past seasons, Ken Swanson and I can both attest to that, as we still have frocen ears to prove it. Jean Natoli opened her badminton season on Tuesday against DeKalb and they are attending the Lake Forest Invitational tomorrow. Gary Gray's tennis team is awaiting its opener when they host a Quad on March 28, and Mary Osterman girls' softball team will open April 3. The veteran coach Don Seaton has plenty of girls out for the girls' track team this season, and his thine lads will open the season hosting Johnsburg and Woodstock on April 6, and Mike Shanahan is getting his water polo team ready for the coming season. This time of year always brings back memories of the >i yei state tourney. We will take you back to the 1952 season when the Hebron Green Giants with 96 students stunned the prep world of Illinois with their 64 59 overtime vic tory over the Quincy Blue Devils. The Biue Devils hau beaten my team in the first game of the Quincy regional (I will not give the score, it was really that bad) and I still think if tney played 10 times Quincy would win 9, but the most important game, the Green Giants won the hearts of the fans of Illinois. I can still remember seeing a lot of McHenry people at Champaign that year rooting for Hebron, and scalpers had a field day in front of Huff gym. STATE FINALS -1952 HEBRON premier "prep" sports writer of the Chicago Sun Times, forgot to mention that McHenry qualified for the "Sweet Sixteen", saying thsit no northwest suburb team ever made it..the ultimate goal of all teams. Coach Ken Ludwig corrected him on that statement in a phone call, and on Saturday McHenry was mentioned as the last team in this area that made it to the "16". The UpState Eight and the Big Nine (Rockford schools) did not have a team in the sectional finals, and don't you think that Buckner gym would have been filled lor a game between Woodstock and Antioch, rather than having both teams travel to Freeport for the game. Anyway, I still haven't figured out after all these years how you can compare conferences or teams, when it comes to tourney time. Who would have thought that little old St. Joseph's would defeat mighty DePaul, or that a school only in existence three years would defeat Kentucky. As they say in the coaching ranks, it's a second season, throw out all past performances, it's the next game that counts. Basketball may be over for the Warriors, but their is alot of activity going on these days at M.C.H.S. Coach Dan Boland has his thinclads working out every day, they have an indoor meet at Crystal Lake this Saturday, and then on April 6 they will engage Johnsburg in an outdoor meet at Johnsburg. The team has already participated in a meet at Northern Illinois university several weeks ago.
