PAGE 13 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. APR1L3JIM1 Check For Library Arson Award-Alert Program! Poi/ce Alert Captain Hugh S. McGinley. commander of District 15, Illinois state police in Oakbrook, would like to make people aware of the Illinois Arson Award program and "Arson Alert". Each year thousands of arson fires in Illinois kill nearly 100 people and cost millions of dollars in property loss and other costs. Nationally the cost of arson is greater than the combined total of all other violent crimes, killing thousands of people and destroying billions of dollars in property According to Illinois law. a person commits arson when he knowingly damages, by fire or explosive. . any property, valued at $150 or more, of another without the owner's consent or with the intent of defrauding the insurance company. Arson is a class 2 felony punishable by a sentence of not less than three years and not more than seven years. When someone is killed, seriously harmed. or disfigured, or if a police officer or firefighter in the line of duty is injured as a result of such a fire or ex plosion, the crime is aggravated arson, which is a class X felony punishable by a sentence of not less than six years and not more than 30 years Community and citizen involvement are essential to combatting arson Until citizens become aware and concerned about the arson problem in their com munity. police and fire of ficals are limited in what they can do to prevent arson and put arsonists behind bars By becoming aware and involved, the public can provide valuable clues which can assist police and fire officals in detecting arsons and arresting arsonists There are many things to do to prevent arson: -Be aware of the arson problem in the community, and spread the word; Protect property so it isn't an easy target for an ar sonist . -Practice good fire prevention by removing fire hazards which might lure arsonists; Be watchful of suspicious activities in the neigh borhood which might be related to arson; -Cooperate with in vestigators at an arson scene, and Most important, call "Arson Alert HOO-252-2947" with any information which might prevent an arson, or lead to the arrest of an ar sonist The Illinois Arson Award program may pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest or conviction of an arsonist Hopefully "Arson Alert" and the Illinois Arson Award program will encourage citizens to help in the war against arson Citizens Alert bulletins are prepared as a public service by the McHenry County Sheriffs Police Crime Prevention section under the direction of Sheriff Henry A.
