Exum, Minister 401 N. Oak St., Crystal Lake 459-4160 Illinois may be facing a third consecutive year of increased animal rabies, according to William L. Kempiners, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health He said that, as of March 17. the 1981 total of reported rabid animals stands at 74. "This is slightly higher than the 65 rabid animals reported by the same date last year, and last year was an all-time record high." he said. During 1980, 524 confirmed cases of animal rabies oc curred in Illinois. The previous high was in 1945 when 477 cases occurred In 1979, there were 227 cases; 76 cases in 1978 , 54 in 1977; and 55 in 1976. "Even more disturbing", Kempiners said, "is the increase of rabies in domestic (farm and pet) animals " Last year, 10 percent of the rabid animals were domestic. So far this year, 23 percent of the rabid animals are domestic. "Because people have more frequent contact with domestic animals, this means more human ex posure to rabies," Kem piners said Skunks are still the most common rabid animals, and are thought to be the source of infection for most domestic animals. * Eleven rabid cattle and five rabid cats have already been reported this year, as compared with 29 rabid cattle and 11 rabid cats during all of 1980 "Rabid cattle pose a special problem". Kem piners said, "in that farmers and veterinarians frequently become exposed to the saliva of a sick animal before they realize the animal has rabies " Kempiners urged that residents in all parts of the state make certain their pet dogs and cats have been immunized against rabies He pointed out that there is no proven effective rabies vaccine for wild animals. Each year rabies vaccine is provided by the state health department to 200-300 persons who have been Legal Notice Sealed bids will be received by the City Council of the City of McHenry, Illinois, at the City Hall (Municipal Building), 1111 North Green Street, until 10:00 a m on Monday, April 13, 1981, for underground fuel tanks and pumps to be installed at the Public Works Maintenance Building, 105 North Green Street, McHenry, Illinois, 60050.
