Weathering 2,200 Homes (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family service and Community Mental Health Center staff This article is "Coping - Giving compliments") A compliment is a sincere expression of appreciation for either a job well done or a pleasing trait (I define compliment to distinguish it from flattery, . which is a compliment with an ulterior motive). Compliments feel good because they are an affirmation from an outside source of what we feel good about in ourselves A good businessman realizes that money is not a very effective motivator for increased productivity How many people do you know iperhaps you are one yourself) that have said, "I don't really like my job, but the money is good, so I put in my time " The good manager learns through experience that expressing appreciation for a job well done, a jpb done right, and on time, provide more motivation by far than a yearly pay raise This kind of manager has his em ployees working for him. rather than working for money. A compliment, whether it is given to an employee, a spouse, a child, or a friend feels best when it is: sincere as opposed to contrived, or telling the person what they want to hear), spontaneous 'not "asked for" by the person getting the com pliment), without ulterior motive (as opposed to giving a compliment to ensure that you get something in return), and without qualifications The last requirement ("without qualifications") deserves some explanation. How many times have you heard something similar to the following statements: "The house looks really nice today, but 1 notice the table is still dusty", "You look great, but why do you wear so much makeup?", or "The. dinner was so good tonight, it's just a pity you burned the beans". Criticism is fine, but it should never be hidden in side of a compliment, because then all of your compliments end up feeling like criticism If yofci want to ITION 2 - PAGE 1 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 3, IM1 criticize, say it straight out otherwise it's like giving a and separate it completely bouquet of roses with a from a compliment; garnish of poison ivy. Over 2,200 homes were weatherized in December, 1980, through the Weatherization Assistance for Low-Income Persons program, according to Department of Commerce FIRE PREVENTION State Fire Marshal Jack H Carter offered the following fire prevention tips to be remembered during spring cleaning. Never store gasoline in an enclosed area and never use it for cleaning or to start a fire; dispose of all unneeded flammable materials such as newspapers, clothing, boxes, books, etc.; store all flammable liquids in tightly- sealed metal containers, away from children; regularly check lint traps and filters on clothes dryers; regularly check all electrical appliances and thoroughly check chimneys for cracks or other problems. Every home should have at least one smoke detector. Carter advised For detailed, public education materials on fire safety and prevention contact the Office of the State Fire Marshal, 3150 Executive Park drive, Springfield and Community Affairs Director John W. Castle. The amount represents the greatest number of homes assisted since the program began in January, 1976. The December figure brought the total number of homes weatherized to 8,299. The weatherization program, administered in Illinois by the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA), is designed to help low-income people, particularly the elderly and handicapped Funds are provided for caulking and weatherstripping windows and doors; installing attic and wall insulation, storm doors, and windows; and making other minor repairs and improvements to reduce heat loss and conserve energy Up to $1,600 is spent per eligible home to cover the cost of labor, equipment, materials, and tran sportation. Last month, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded DCCA $15 million in new weatherization funds. The grant will assist an estimated 9,100 homes this year. Community action agencies, planning com missions. and other social service centers ad ministering the program at the local level report that current needs for assistance for 1981 exceed $26,000,000.
