V v PAGE 7 - PLAIN DEALER - WEDNESDAY. APRILS, 1M1 Eight Local Cagers Selected For All-County Honors The 1980-81 McHenry County Basketball Team was announced Monday night as the featured portion of the annual county banquet sponsored by eight area newspapers. Among the 32 players selected to Class A and AA honors were eight local boys who helped turn the local basketball campaigns into eventful seasons for McHenry, Johnsburg and Marian Central. A first team, second team and honorable mention squad was picked for each class by sports editors and sports writers of the county newspapers Local players recognized in Class AA included, Bob Greve of McHenry, (first team), Bob Zeller of McHenry, (second team) and John Costigan, also of McHenry, (second team). In Class A, Rick Neiss of Johnsburg and Carl Brown of Marian Central collected first team honors, while Tom Pieper of Johnsburg ,and Brad Gregory shared second team recognition. Chuck Novy of the Skyhawks was named to the Class A honorable mention squad. Besides the award ceremony which ended the day's activity, Dick Versace, the fiery coach of the Bradley University Bulldog basketball team flew in to speak to the crowd of players, parents and coaches. The "silver haired" out spoken Bradley mentor spoke about his early days in coaching, the Illinois basketball scene in general and ended with a message to the young players. He relived his childhood for the audience, em phasizing that he was never a star or starting player in high school basketball and referred to himself as "the slowest guard in America." Coming from a family which displayed a father and brother who attended West Point and a mother who was the author of the book "The Flying Nun," Versace said the discipline in his family w»e onnH fnr him and that he always wanted be a leader, especially as a head basketball coach. His first job was at Forrest, Illinois, a town of 1200. Versace was in terviewed at the age of 23 for a head coaching job at Forrest. Little did Versace know that the interview was for the head football position and not the basketball job. He accepted the football job and in the first year at Forest, his team won the conference with an un defeated record. "It was the most beautiful example of community living that I had ever seen," Versace blurted. Eventually the coach moved on to St. Joseph high school in Kenosha, Wisconsin and remembers playing local cage teams like Marengo and Harvard at the time. "I can't remember losing to any of those teams at the time," Versace boasted. After a 65-29 record at St. Joseph's, Versace moved on to,, Gordon Tech High School where he compiled a 102-17 record in four years and numerous . championships He moved on to Jackson Community College in 1976 and in two years sported a record of 47-13 before moving on to Bradley where he has built a solid program in just three years while collecting 1980 Coach of the Year honors in the Missouri Valley Conference. Looking back on his career. Versace said the main thing which he wanted young people to grasp is that the "striving years" are as valuable as the glory years. "You will enjoy life much more if you realize the value of the striving years," the coach said to the players in attendance He also encouraged the players to say "Thank you" to those who help them with their future. "If you have any courage running through your veins at all. the smartest thing to do is to go to your coach, whether you liked him or not. and say Thanks," Versace con cluded. Down in the cellar making sauerkraut At 11 p m. Friday we were in our living room when the lights went out. Out came the flashlights. We didn't light the holy candles this time First thought was of the fuse box Then we saw the whole neighborhood in darkness and decided to wait it out like everybody else. Misery loves company Still no electricity at wake- up time. Made us wonder about refrigeration These modern times! Phooey. No Chance to remove the whiskers since I use an electric shaver Couldn't boil water for coffee since we have an electric stove The electric clock was stopped, but the old wind-up alarm set us straight Decided we would drive down town to get our break fast McHenry Netters Split Pair A loss to Antioch spoiled what could have been a perfect week for the McHenry High tennis team. The Warriors dropped a 3-2 decision to Antioch after posting a 4-1 victory over Elgin Larkin earlier in the week. Scott Rhode and Chris Stumbris continued their fine play and improved their individual records to 4-1 on the season. Rhode defeated his Elgin opponent 7-6, 6-0 at first singles. Stumbris won an easy 6-0, 6-0 match at third singles. Brad Salman rounded out singles play with a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6,1- 6 loss at number two. Randy Glick and Kevin Burgess teamed to win 7-6, 6-0 at first doubles and Dave Bauer and Ed Donahue won 6-1,6-1. Rhode provided the only Warrior win in singles against Antioch, copping a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Salman lost 2-6, 1-6 and Stumbris fell 3-6, 5-7. Bauer and Donahue won again, 6-2, 6-1, but Burgess and Glick lost 5-7, 3-6. McHenry returns to action with a match at home against Streamwood on April 8. The Warriors host a quadrangular April 11 at 10 a.m. USGA Qualifying June 4 The United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced that the US Women's Amateur Public Links Championship is to be held at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, Ore., from June 24 to 28. Along came Judge Herrmann, a good Samaritan, and took us down to the Little Chef. Thanked the kindly Judge and told him to be back in half an hour. Sure enough! He was back. Alvina was embarrassed. I wasn't Our good Samaritan told us the cause of our elec tricity problem was Harvey Nye Yep Harvey let a tree blow down in his front yard and knocked out the whole area As we drove past we saw Harvey and Eva's son-in- law. Craig Baldwin, ap pearing on the scene with all the tools of a lumberjack Harvey sat inside to direct operations. Some time after power was restored. Cousin Mary phoned to tell us our yard light was burning. Must say a good word for somcbady in the Public Service Co. main office. I phoned, like many others Later he phoned back to see if all was well at our ranch. Nice fellow. SUDDEN THOUGHT - People talk about driving through McHenry "bumper to bumper". That's better than fender to fender Said I was all through with that Volo bull, but Laura Phannenstill has the last word Her family lived on that farm and the price was 100 thousand What's more. Laura says the barn was yellow That 's all for the Volo bull It caused more talk than the Volo Bog Stanley Schaffer phoned and questioned that I can remember all those yarns about the farm "Then and Now" Theh-- I can't remember' 1 was there Those young kids! Kenosha, Wisconsin March 24.1981 Dear Earl: You have a sports writer who agrees with you on the Rally Beats Marian The girl softballers of Marian Central jumped out to a 4- 0 lead in the first inning against Cary-Grove last Thursday, but the Hurricanes were unable to hold the advantage, falling to the Troians, 7-6. By the fifth stanza, Marian had allowed the 4-0 lead to dwindle into a 6-5 deficit. Paddy Guerin then added a booming homer to her two other hits in the game which brought the Hurricanes into a 6-6 standoff after six innings. A Marian error in the sixth helped Cary-Grove to the eventual winning run, while Marian failed to score in its seventh inning thanks to a great catch by the Troian centerfielder. Nancy Walsh's line shot was snared with a runner in scoring position on second base. Guerin led the locals with a 3 for 4 effort including the game-tying homer. McHenry phenom Linda Aim was 2 for 3 including a double, and she fielded eight chances flawlessly from her shortstop position. Junior Jackie Weber took the loss as Marian coach Kerry Muldowney takes his crew to Richmond-Burton on Wednesday. DANCE IN PERSON DON PEACHEY AND HIS FAMOUS Rf CORDING ORCHIS1RA FRIDAY.
