!• I' l> I» I I 1' I» «- I- * * * * Your Police Department by Officer Jim Fitzgerald Publ ic Re la t ions Of f icer McHenry C i ty Po l ice Phone 385 -2131 I had a chance to par ticipate in this year's Trade fair by being in our booth on Sunday, and it was nice to meet so many of you all, and get a chance to talk to a few of you face to face. It was fun to get so many nice com ments, and we really ap preciate them. We also caught some "heat" from a few people, and it was also nice to be able to discuss with them their questions and try and get on a better footing. I'm really looking forward to next year's Trade fair, and 1 hope you all will stop by and say "hello". Spring is finally here now, and although it has only recently been really nice enough to bring out the bicycles, we have already had numerous reports of stolen bikes. It is beginning to look like there is going to be another real problem with bike thefts this year, so I though I'd give my two cents worth of information out early, and maybe stop some of the problems. Those of you who are going to be lucky enough to get a brand new bike this year will be spending some heavy money for your new pur chase, and it is only smart to plan ahead to protect your bike from theft. After you drop two weeks pay on that flashy 10-speed, spend a little more on a good heavy chain and lock, and then use it each and every time you get off the bike, even at home Many bike thefts occur right out of your front yard, along with the obvious ones where you went into the store for "just a minute," and left the bike against the building. Wrap that chain around the frame and through both tires, then around the most sturdy post you can find, and then lock it securely At home, keep your bike close to the house during.the daytime, and inside the; house or garage at night. If you can't put it in the house or garage, lock the bike to something in the yard, even the car bumper if nothing else is available. Some people have gone as far as putting a large eye bolt through the side of the hose, so they can have something to run the chain through. While you are still at the bike shop, ask the owner or salesman to point out to you where the serial number is located on the bike frame, and write it down. Most of the more expensive bikes come with an owner's manual and you can write down in there the legal description and serial number, and model number, color, any extra options put on the bike like a horn, headlamp, saddle bag, etc. Then if it is ever stolen you can report it to the police with a good description, such as Belchfire Ramrod 10- speed; Model No. A 110-4; Serial No. 439A625178; Col*r- Red; Racing Handlebars with Black Tape; Black seat; Chrome Fenders; Headlamp, etc.; McHenry IttNTIMSQllMC the professional do-it-yourself carpet cleaning system first Hour of Rental $1.00 per hour . . . for every hour thereafter. Come in to the Police department and register the bicycle, and we will give you a numbered stickon tag to put on the frame, so that when we do find a bike wherever, we can return it faster. The other number, DLN F326, is mom or dad's driver's license number which you have etched into the paint somewhere out of sight with an electric pencil, which you can borrow from the police department. Use mom or dad's driver's license number, not their Social Security number. We have no way of tracing a Social Security number. A driver's license num ber can be put into our computer and we can get a response right away, and get your bike back faster. Registering your bike with the Police department, marking down its descrip tion and serial number, color and the license number etched into the paint also applies to you who already have a bike too, as does chaining it up to something secure You all have already spent your hard earned money, so protect your property too While you are at the Police department registering your bike, ask for a free copy of the bicycle Rules of the Road while you are at it Many of you are not aware of the laws governing bicycles, such as the one which states you must stop at all stop lights and signals just like a car! Have fun riding your bikes, and do it safely while you are at it. See you next week. Some people fear life and death and others fear neither, Why? At the end of the third quarter of study. Montini Middle school placed 86 students on its honor roll. To make the honor roll, a student must have a grade point average of 3.00 ("B") or better in the eight academic subjects. A 4.00 would represent a straight ("A") average. The honor students cited at 3.50 or above are: 4.00-Brian Smith; 3 88-Julie Bowman. Bridgid Lean and Wendy Turner; 3.86-Amy Bassi; 3.75-Tanja Nuhsbaum, Peter Stumpf and Michael Freund (grade 6); 3.71 Michele Sch- wanke; 3 63-Elizabeth Schafer.
