THE WINNER - Breaking the tape to win the 800 meter run is Johnsburg's Missy Christie. Her effort Tuesday helped the EARL WALSH' So I Hear Local Girls Split It was early Monday morning when I returned to the bedroom after putting the tea kettle on the burner as my contribution to preparing breakfast Came a call from the kitchen, "Are you talking to yourself in there?" Huh! Some people don't recognize singing. Actually, my attempt at vocalizing was a rendition of "The Beautiful Tennessee Waltz". _ Maybe the choice of song was a carry over from the night before when our niece, Eloise Freund, was married to Steven Benes (as nice a pair of young people as you will be finding) All of a sudden my ears perked up and an Irish tune wafted through the air Then came a shocker Eloise came over and asked me to dance. Honored as I was, the thought -of not having been on a dance floor for 20 years due to leg problems scared me. _ But, strong urging put me on the dance floor with the beautiful bride in my arms I didn't last long, but the memory must have lingered on as I warbled the Ten nessee.; Waltz on Monday morning. Looking over my stack of St. Patrick's cards, this one gave me a chuckle all over again: On the outside: "Thought you might like a St. Patrick's Day card that was a little bit different--" On the inside: "MAZEL TOV" Of course I knew what it meant. That is, I knew after opening Mr. Webster's oft used book which shows "Good Luck -- Often used as congratulations". Hebrew. Happiness was added from John Looze and Sam Diamond In this age of overlapping seasons, basketball still holds the spotlight, but baseball is about to take over the center of the stage. The White Sox won't be playing until Friday so I'll have to watch that other team Thursday. A certain girl who dishes out stamps in Uncle Sam's Post Office talked me into a bet on the Cub game I'll have to go in and collect right after the game. Some of the experts pick the Sox to finish in third place. Others say fourth. I'll go with third for this year Then, look oyt! It just seems terrible that so many are picking the Cubs for last place. Maybe they weren't figuring on that pitcher the Cubs got from the Sox, Ken Kravec He'll show em! Don't know how I ever worked a crossword puzzle before 1 had a special dic tionary There are words in there I never knew were a part of our language. Can't remember those odd ones In fact, I've forgotten more than I ever knew. He struck out five en route to a complete-game victory. "Pete did a heckuva nice job for us," said an elated coach Jim Meyers. "We played good defense to back him up and we finally hit the ball. I'm very pleased." Although the win was only the first in three tries for the Hawks, Meyers claimed the pitching has not been totally at fault. "We've only allowed six walks and four earned runs in three games " Johnsburg got all the runs it needed in the second in ning. Joe Meyers reached on an error, stole second and scored when the Grayslake catcher dropped Doug Wick man's third strike and threw the ball into right field Wickman later scored on a fielder's choice In the third, Tom Pieper walked, moved to second on Rob Peisert's sacrifice and scored on Dave Maurer's double. Presented By STATE BANK of RICHMOND Member F.D.I.C. Q. It eeeme each month the new consumer price index it awaited with greet enticlpetion. How should I view the index es en individuel con sumer? A. As an individual con sumer, the best view to take of the consumer price index is probably a critical one. Although a statement like, "The same goods and services which sold for $100 in 1967 sells for $230 today", does make a point concerning the ravages of inflation, it is misleading in that the goods and services bought today are not the same as those bought thirteen years ago- In formulating the CPI, figures are gathered from a number of geographic areas, some figures are weighted white others may be distorted, although not arbitrarily. Thus, your best individual indicator is your own "CPI" derived from past records. Your financial advisor is a good source of information on how to budget using your own "CPI". Wakitsch at the plate, but Pieper hit a run scoring fly ball Peisert walked to load the bases before Maurer delivered a clutch double to empty the sacks Johnsburg put the icing on the cake with a five-run salvo in the fifth Wickman walked. A double and an infield out put a runner on third Tom Kirk singled, but left fielder Dave Williams cut down the lead runner with a perfect strike to the plate. "That play v\as just beautiful," gushed Coach Meyers 'The guy was out by so much I couldn't believe it That's the kind of defense we had todav. Sue Haddick gave up only two hits, but the locals could only put one run across the plate The annual County Basketball banquet was held Monday night at West campus. It again was a gala affair, with 32 of the county's finest basketball players in attendance. Eight newspapers in the county sponsor the event, and it is becoming bigger and better every year. Bob Greve, ^Bob Zeller and John Costigan of the Warriors were honored, along with the Skyhawk's Rick Neiss, Tom Pieper and Chuck Novy The colorful Dick Versace of Bradley university was the main speaker In between blowing his own horn, the colorful mentor of the Braves gave a good talk, and left a message to the athletes that attended the banauet He had ; been only-in major college coaching for three years At that rate Ray a press release of ovef six pages, and he has Meyer of DePaul will have to Iteve a pickup truck just to carry around his press releases for the media The Bradley coach was under a bit of pressure last Monday evening He had to fly to Chicago to meet a recruit at 10 p.m and told me that the unnamed lad he was seeking could make or break his program for the next four years So with that kind of pressure I guess you can forgive some of his faults He did lift some eyebrows when he mentioned that he never was a starter in any level of basketball in which he participated, yet became a student of the game. Give credit where credit is due, he is coaching in the major college ranks Bob Matte, former Marengo coach and now an instructor at McHenry County college, was the emcee for the evening Not as witty as our Own S I H columnist, nevertheless he did an outstanding job during the evening Eleanor Regelin, chief cook and bottle washer at West campus, and ner fine crew of ladies put out an excellent meal for the crowd of 130 There were a few boys slipping in for seconds We would like to welcome Jeff Stern to the Plaindealer and to the city of McHenry.
