PAGE6-PI LLER - WEDNESDAY. APRIL 15. 1981 is Hawks Come Alive UP AND OVER - This pole vault attempt posed no problem for Johnsburg trackster John Payne. Of course, that has been the case most of this season. Payne has already cleared 11 feet in the event this year and should improve throughout the year. The action occurred in last week's meet against Grant a n d C a r y - G r o v e . STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Johnsburg's Softball team pounded out 23 hits and took advantage of several errors by Beloit Catholic to post a 20-14 victory last week. The win was the first of the season for the Skyhawks, who havte struggled at the plate and in the field this year. "I was very happy to win the game, but I'm a little disappointed we didn't win hv fhr 10-run rule." said Johnsburg coach Bob Sch- mitt. "We had six errors and it helped them get back in the ballgame." Beloit lead early in the game, but the Skyhawks rallied twice. The visitors took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Hawks struck for six runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. In the second, Beloit scored four more runs. "After we had that big first inning, I thought we were really on to something big," sighed Schmitt. But we let them get right back into the game because of our fielding." Fortunately for the Hawks, Ruth Pflug, Patty Haag and Kim Grenman all laced hits with runners on base. Johnsburg scored 10 times in the second and took a lead they never lost. Dawn Haynie came on to pitch in the third and allowed only five rims the rest of the way to earn the victory. Pflug, Haag and Sue Dehn all had four hits to pafce the winner's offense. Meanwhile, Schmitt still frets over his defense, which has been, to say the least, generous to opponents thus far. f "We have some seniors, three-year ieiifrmni. making the same mistakes," the coach lamented. "We have (o practice the basics some more, and we have to have better concentration." .Schmitt said things im proved later in the game, but he was still unhappy with the defense in general. Adding to Schmitt's chagrin was Friday's rain. The coach and several players had worked for four hours trying to get the field ready for the scheduled game against Richmond, but the rains came to wash away that effort. The Skyhawks will try again Thursday, April 16 when they travel to Hononegah for a 4:15 con test. The description wouldn't be fittin' for a family newspaper Ask him Everybody likes to talk about their confinement in hospitals Nobody asked me, but here goes for some of my experiences y As a young man I entered the old West Side Hospital in Chicago Ten days in bed Wouldn't let me put my feet on the floor. That's the way it was in those days. It was the day before Christmas when the doctor released me A nurse wanted to help me get dressed She wasn't going to dress me! I was a big boy So. she put a screen around my bed. Just as I tried to pull my pants up, whammo! I flopped the bed Said the nice nurse, "I have been standing by -- Old rubber legs " So -- for the first time since the age when my mother dressed me a female helped me get my pants on. Not long ago a fellow told me of spending six weeks in a hospital and added, "You have no idea what it is like." No need of spoiling his story so I didn't relate how I had spent six months in a hospital, entering in January and going home in July. That was some stretch. When the spirit moved me, I wrote poetry. It's a lot cheaper to die these days than spend 6 months in a hospital. In those days it was bad enough for my pocketbook. A fairly good savings account was shot at eight dollars a day for a private room and two student nurses at eight dollars each Five weeks of that and into a ward at $3.50 per day. It would probably cost that much today for aspirin. A relapse sent me back to the private room. That was a revoltin' development. Something went wrong in the middle of the night and a consultation of doctors took place Never thought I was so seriously ill cause I heard what they were saying outside my door. It might have sent a less sensitive patient into shock. A student nurse cried until I assured her my time wasn't up Back to the ward where there were moans and groans, but a certain amount of fun. Because my mother, sisters and Aunt Katie kept me well supplied with cookies and other goodies, service was especially good. Uncle Jim. a retired Chicago fireman, came once a week with a 2-pound box of Fanny May candy. Seemed to me the nurses timed his arrival with un canny accuracy. They met him at the elevator and made a big fuss over him. We put a rubber mouse on the floor in the corner near my bed and she swished the mop around there for a week without seeing the mouse. A moaner in the bed near the window kept everybody awake during the night as he begged for something to kill his pain. The night nurse explained that she couldn't give the moaner anything without his doctor's order. • "Gwn lira wnwthiHg'Mr I'M jump out the window," was his threat. An old Irshman sat up in bed and said, "If I thought you would, I'd get up and take off the screen for you." The threat brought the nurse in with a little glass containing two white pills, carrying it on a tray like a t waitress The grateful moaner came out with "Oh, thank you nurse, thank you", rolled over and went to sleep. If those weren't soda- bicarb pills, I'll eat my shirt When a doctor suggested an "exploratory" operation, my trail led to the famous Mayo Clinic Didn't like that word. Arrived by train during the night and a taxi driver took me to a nice little hotel across the street from the clinic. The room was $1.25 per day. Everybody gathered around the lobby in the evening to discuss their operations. After a week going through the clinic, surgery was scheduled. v After soaking and soaping in the tub, I entered the hospital and was greeted by a nurse who informed me that my first act was to take a bath. Explanations were to no avail. Believe me, that was once over lightly. Private room was $40 per week. Worse than the surgery was coming out of the anesthetic and looking up at a brawny male nurse I wanted to go back to sleep. All those things happened when I was a single man Later, with a wife and children, an appendectomy found me in Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan. Through all the years, I didn't complain about my stays in hospitals, but this was different I wanted to get home to my family TTO-- j: j _ w iiic iiui aca uiuii i e v e n have the same appeal as in younger years Could relate much more, but space and readers' endurance forces me to end my story. Without Pociask's heroics, it would've been a crime to see Budaj lose. But then, without Budaj, McHenry might not have had a prayer "Scott saved the day for us," said elated coach Mike Shanahan. "In this sport if you stop more than half of the shots, you've done an outstanding job. Scott stopped two-thirds of their attempts. He really did a job for us." Budaj's heroics came in handy when the Lions went up 5-2 midway through the first half The Warrior goalie made some out standing saves in the deep end of the pool to thwart the opportunistic Lions. "The deep end of the pool is a disadvantage for the goalie." Shanahan ex plained, "because the goalie has a harder time jumping. So those were key saves." McHenry trailed by one goal at halftime, but it could have been much worse. The Warriors stayed within a goal throughout the second half and even held a 9-8 edge at one point But St. Viator's is not the type of team that will roll over and die when behind. The Lions applied heavy pressure on the Warrior goal and Budaj finally suc cumbed With just over two minutes left, St. Viator took a 10-9 lead. "They got more shots than we'd like an opponent to get," said Shanahan. "We tried to slow the gbme down, but they swim well and got a lot of shots." Shanahan took a timeout and the strategy was set. A St Viator player was caught in terfering with a free pass and was ejected from the pool for a 30-second penalty. McHenry seized the op portunity and, with just 14 ticks left on the clock, Pociask's shot found its way into the net The Lions never got a shot off in the waning moments and McHenry had a very important win. "We have a much better record (5-2) than I thought we'd have at this point," said Shanahan "The difference has been our goaltending Scott has played well in every game." Unlike their other games this season, the Warrior scoring was not balanced. Pociask had five goals and three assists, Keith Gregg lit the lamp four times and helped on two other scores, and John Clewis added a pair of tallies. Although McHenry's upcoming schedule includes mostly weaker teams, the Warriors cannot afford a letdown. They host Glen- brook North April 21 before traveling to Highland Park April 24. If the Warriors need help in a pinch, all they need do is look to their goalie. "He's carried the load so far," said Shanahan. "We need that very much." The Warriors also trounced Highland Park last week, winning an easy 20-10 decision Pociask, Gregg, Bob Schaeffer and Rob Grom scored four goals each.
