A cat owned by a Plaindealer employee returned home last Friday, proudly displaying the frightened and slightly injured bunny. It was brought to the office in a box and immediately claimed by the composing room foreman, Laura O'Brien, who nursed him back to health. On Wednesday, the recovered ball of fur was displayed to the public by Mrs.O'Brien, who holds a carrot for site comparison. Soon she will release the lively creature in the woods, sending with it the hope that this time he may escape all predators. To be extra secure, you can cut a piece of 1" square wood, or a broom handle.and wedge it into the track area of any window to make it impossible to slide open This is also the best way to secure a sliding glass patio door There are patio door track locks which you can buy. but the piece of wood is the cheapest. If you have an attached garage, be sure that you also check the overhead door If you have an automatic garage door opener.' unplug the device. This way, it will not open accidently, and the bar attached to the track and door will act as an extra barrier to unauthorized opening You can also stick a screwdriver into one of the holes in the wheel track to block free movement of the wheels. I'm sure that everyone has by now heard enough about how good deadbolt locks are. and everyone has them instated on all the exterior doors, righf No9 These are by far the best possible door locks available, and everyone should have them The ones where you need a key from inside and outside are the best available With this type of lock, there is no doubt in your mind that the door is locked when you leave. Since you have now secured the house all you have to do is tell a few people that you are going away for awhile. Who0 Four people * * * * * * * » exactly: the mailman, the newspaper boy;yettr neigh- bor. and the police You will tell the mailman and paperboy so that the mail and papers don't pile up and act as a homing beacon to burglars Tell your neigh bor so that he-she can watch for any unusual things going on around the house. Also give them a key to the front door. They maybe will water the plants, and let the police into the house just in case If you cortie to the police , station and fill out a housecheck form, we will physically check your house every night that you are gone We will also need to know who has a key to get into the house, if needed Before you leave, did you remember to set the timer lights9 You'll need at least three, set to go off and on at different times of the day. Drum corps is an activity where everyone finds ac ceptance. regardless of color, religion, financial status, or a multitude of other differences in background It is an activity in which other traits -- even say, one in the living room, one in the kitchen, and one in the bedroom. An optional one can be hooked up to a radio or TV set to add the extra touch to make it look like someone is home You might also want to leave on the front and back porch lights to illuminate the door area. Maraccini said the county ASC committee has assigned priorities to the overall conservation needs in McHenry county and the percentage of costsharing will be based on these priority ratings. Some of the high priority problems in clude terrace systems, sod waterways, diversions and water control structures. Solutions to these problems can be cost-shared up to 75 percent. ACP funds are used to correct conservation and pollution problems on a farm beyond that which would be accomplished with the farmer's own resources. The program provides both technical and financial assistance to farmers whose land is a source of agricultural pollution or affected by soil or water erosion. Maraccini said soil erosion is a major problem for farmers and with today's more intensive cropping patterns it is vital that producers perform good soil and water conservation practices such as those offered under the ACP. "We urge farmers who have conservation problems they wish to solve to apply as soon as possible," the ASCS official said Further assistance may also be obtained from the Soil Conservation Service and Extension Service THANK YOU I would like to extend my appreciation to those voters who supported me in my successful bid for Treasurer of the city of McHenry.
