A thoughtful friend phone to say a ticket has been reserved for me and tran sportation arranged You can't beat that kind of a friend. There is no greater Sox fan than our friend Mona Man, was she excited when she phoned Monday night to say she was going to the opening game on Tuesday She must have been on cloud nine as the Go-Go Sox became the Marvelous Maulers in manhandling the great Milwaukee Brewers 9 to 3. Mona submitted a design for the new Sox uniforms for 1982, but will have to wait a while to learn the results If she should win that contest, she would never come down out of the clouds The new owners of the Sox came into the league with a bulging wallet and got some players that are making the investments look good Catcher Carlton Fisk has shown a big bat and handled the pitchers with skill In the opener at Boston, the pitching coach didn't go out to the mound even one time. That tells us something. Vic Miller has a couple of Irish jokes to tell me I'm anxious Have been wondering about Clyde Black well Sent him a card. It went to his home, to the Veterans Hospital, then back to me Well, I finally met him. It is only three weeks since surgery and he can't un derstand why his pep hasn't returned. He's only 90 years old! Reminds me of the time I took Uncle John to the doctor when he was 86 years old. After taking pills, he complained, "It's been two weeks since I went to that d- - doctor and I'm not well yet". A lady phoned to say McHenry was in the news on radio station WIND. I tuned in, but couldn't get the whole story I take it they had an adoption story that will be on the air April 24 at 1:30 p.m Sounds like a tear jerker. The envelope that came in the mail was fully packed. -- Packed with clippings about the great Chicago ( u b s l n a d n o i d e a t i i e y a i r so wonderful. In the upper left hand corner we learned the press clippings came from "Millions and Millions of Chicago Cub Fans " In these days of inflation, people speak in millions instead of thousands, hun dreds or -- just a few. Apropos of your column a couple of weeks ago when we had that gorgeous Spring weather.. I meant to do my work today But a brown bird sang in the apple tree A butterfly flitted across the field And all the leaves were calling to me... The wind went sighing over the land Tossing the grasses to and fro' A rainbow held out its shining hand So what could I do but laugh and go.. That glorious day, Easter Sunday, will soon loom over the horizon May the Easter Bunny bring you love and joy with every egg you find. and Ritthaler outdistanced the field, and the Warriors brought home the first-place trophy. Karen Karpavicius was the big story versus Grayslake, as she slammed a three-run home in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. The stfphomore shortstop led the Warriors in f batting, going three for three with a base on balls. Pitcher Sue Haddick chalked up eight strikeouts and gave up only three base hits, but she was a bit wild, as she walked nine batters and hit 2. McHenry took the early lead in the first when leadoff batter Kathy Bitterman singled and went to third on Karpavicius' base hit. That set up the first of two suc cessful Warrior double steals Bitterman scored on the theft to make it 1-0. Sue Dixon had the Warriors rolling in the third with a big double. Kar pavicius singled and stole second to set up Pam West's two-run single West later scored on a passed ball after advancing to third base on a walk to Tammy Sproull and Vicky Nowak's base hit. Finally in the fourth Karpavicius slammed her homer with Robin Geiger and Dixon on base Haddick and West followed with base hits, setting the stage for another successful double steal. Grayslake scored in the fourth on a passed ball after three bases on balls loaded the bases. In the fifth, two more walks and a hit bat sman plus an error*5 on an attempted pick off at third brought in the second run. The Rams scored their final run in the sicth. combining two base hits with a base on balls. McHenry scored two runs in the bottom half of the last 1 rining- as they defeated Woodstock 6-5 in a con ference thriller. The Warriors saved four of their game total five hits for that final inning. Geiger bunted perfectly to lead off. Dixon followed with a base hit with Geiger going to third Dixon stole second to put the tying and winning runs in scoring position with no outs. Karpavicius slashed a double down the third baseline with Geiger tying the score. However a perfect relay throw from the third baseman nailed Dixon at the plate Haddick moved Karpavicius to third with a clutch single and then a passed ball brought in the winning run Both pitchers were tough on the batters Each gave up only five hits, but Haddick had a little more control than her Blue Streak foe She struck out 11 batters and walked only six Wood stock's Connie Brink struck ou tthree but walked eleven Abase on balls helped put the Warriors ahead early when Geiger drew a walk, stole second and scored on two passed balls In the fourth an error, two more walks. Lorri Knaack's run- scoring base hit and a passed ball gave McHenry a 3-0 k?.d Woodstock scored its first run after two were out in the fourth inning Laurie Shulfer and Laurie Raeder both singled, with Shulfer scoring an unearned run on a throwing error The streaks scored another unearned run in the fifth before Haddick could strike out the side Woodstock's Kim Adams reached base on error, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball McHenry stretched its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Donna Chester walked and rounded the bases on three passed balls. However, a lineout doubleplay - Woodstock's third of the game - cut short the inning. That set the stage for the wild seventh inning. Woodstock scored three runs to take the lead for the first time. 5-4. Warrior errors, two base on balls and a pair of singles did the damage before Haddick struck out two of the last three batters McHenry is now 2-1 in conference. 4-2 overall The next game is a conference doubleheader set for Saturday versus Cary Grove "t Kasting On To Bradley Sandy Kasting has been awarded a volleyball scholarship to Bradley universi ty by head coach Annelle Griff in Kasting has won eight varsi ty let ters at Marian Central Catholic high school in volleyball , baskethn" t-"* She was named all-conference in the West Suburban Catholic in volleyball and basketball Sandy will major in physical education she is the daughter of Mr and Mrs David Bowles of Wonder Lake WE RE YOUR FULL SERVICE SPECIALISTS For: ~ •Lawn Fertilizer •Weed Control •Tree Feeding •Crab Grass Control •Disease Control And More!
