Historical Museum Opens | VANews I Season With May 3 Program ONE DISADVANTAGE OF BE IMG RETIRED IS THAT YOU DRINK COFFEE ON YOUR OWN TIME Preparations are now under way to open the McHenry County Historical museum in Union beginning Sunday, May 3. To open the new season, the society is holding a special 2 p.m. historic piaquing and rededication ceremony for the 1847 Luke Gannon log ca bin moved last fall from the fair grounds to the museum. National, state, and county- wide officials as well as Gannon descendants have been invited to attend. The log cabin, restored to an 1850's period, will serve throughout the season, May through October, as a background for pioneering demonstrations including soap making, white washing, and wool preparation. Other scheduled Sunday programs will feature the popular fur trapper rendezvous staged annually by Dale "Woody" Woodruff of Marengo and his wife, Pam, a Greenwood pioneering activities day, a program on historic tools, and loom demonstrations to mention a few. "New" to the ^museum this year is a portion of the store fixtures an inventory from the old Leader Hard ware store in Fox River Grove which first opened in 1921 This collection was donated by John Opatrny of Fox Rw/er Grove. Only at the Lead^jr Hardware store was one fiKeJy to find such items as leatheVvalves for pitcher spout pumps or iron cobbler nails Besides the addition of the old hardware furnishings, the society was able to have a 19th century barn frame WOODSTOCK THEATRE ITIPiN STREET - Just Off the Square LOCPLLY OWNED & OPERATED A l l c c a t c t i c n * 1 0 0 S A T . & S U N . Potter, Painter In Opera House Exhibit An exhibit of the works of potter David Trumbel and w a t e r c o l o r i s t R o g e r Bechtold will open at the Woodstock Opera House gallery April 25. The exhibit is free to the public and will continue through May 13. David Trumbel is a professional potter from Richmond. Trumbel's pieces are primarily utilitarian such as lidded boxes, jars, vases, and cannisters. He is self-taught and has devoted 10 years to learning his craft. Roger Bechtold is a resident of Woodstock and a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago. The pieces in the exhibit will be traditional subject matter, such as landscapes, woodland vignettes, lake and beach scenes. Among the paintings on view will be themes as diverse as a Door county, Wis., lighthouse in a t h u n d e r s t o r m , w i t h predominantly gray-green colors, and a storefront from Chicago's Chinatown with its 'emphasis in Chinese red. Most of the nature scenes are from the Woodstock area. The exhibit will be on view Tuesday through Saturday, noon until 5:30 p.m., and during all performances. Further information may be obtained by calling the Woodstock Opera House. An ingrate is something less to blame for his ingratitude than the one who did him the favor. •La Rochefoucauld. As to the ungrateful, there is not one who does not at last die miserable. •Jean De La Fontaine. (Editor's Note: Following are representative questions answered daily by VA counselors. Full information is available at any VA of fice.) Q. - I am attending school under the GI Bill. I have been referred to the Veterans Administration by my training facility because of unsatisfactory progress. Is counseling mandatory in my case? A. Under present guidelines, a claims examiner reviews a veteran's situation to assess whether he may be per mitted to continue in his training program. A veteran has the option of requesting counseling as a means of resolving an unsatisfactory progress issue. „ Q. - I receive a Veterans Administration widow's pension and I recently started receiving Sup plemental Social Security Income (SSI). Am I required to report this additional income to VA? A. - Yes. Even though public assistance such as SSI is not considered income for VA pension purposes,' you should report it and all other changes in your income to VA. Q. - Can active duty service personnel get a GI guaranteed home loan? A. -- Yes. Veterans Ad ministration form 26-1880 must be completed and submitted to the nearest VA regional office with a statement of service signed by the serviceman's com manding officer. VA will then issue the loan guaranty eligibility certification. oca POQOOQQQQQ( The year s best film." -C'harlr* C'hamplin OS ANOELES TIMES P^Otr»<)fAp^ hy HELP CELEBRA TE NATIONAL LIFE INSURANCE WEEK With A fMNCAKf BREAKFAST To Benefit Pioneer Center for the Exceptional SUNDAY, APRIL 26th 8:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. at the Woodstock Moose Lodge 406 Clay Street, Woodstock Donations: Adults $2.50; Children (undor 12) $1.50; Undtr i Km •Sponsored by McHenry County- Life Underwriters Association Jeanne C.
