Most pet owners are aware of the immediate steps to take to trv to insure their pet's safe return, contacting Animal Control. Helping Paws, local police, and radio and newspapers. But. sometimes a very ef ficient and dedicated resource is overlooked - the children of the neigh borhood. One of our much loved family pets, a gentle and affectionate ferret named Beorn Bear, recently pushed open a screen door and decided to explore the great out of doors Since ferrets have practically no homing instinct and are totally trusting of cats, dogs and people, we were extremely concerned about Bears' chances for a safe return We publicized our missing "ferret at Prairie Grove school the day following his disappearance, and many of the children volunteered to look for him as soon as they were home from school. The children scoured their neigh borhood on foot and on bicycles, checking empty lots, roadsides, brush piles, culverts and small places where a ferret might hide Seventh grader Larry Arnold and fifth grader Brad Naegele even took flyers door to door which described the ferret and suggested places where he might be taking refuge Before evening of that day. Bear was found and safely returned Melinda Morris and Jeff Reiss of St Peter and Paul school spotted the ferret exploring a driveway about half a block from home and returned him to his delighted family. All animal owners would be wise to enlist the aid of neighborhood children in locating lost pets Children are sincere and enthusiastic in their concern for animals and they can be depended upon to be efficient and dedicated pet detectives.
