PM Magazine MKE At 7: Business Of Wlsconain Behind* © the Scenes Rooney tackles bittersweet TV role New York--"The thing most important in my life at this time is my 'Fun-filled Family' project, for people over 45 years of age," said Mickey Rooney. Moments before, the white-haired, blue-eyed Rooney was in front of the cameras making dozens of youngsters howl with laughter, starring as Jack Thum, a freelance Chicago clown, in "Leave 'Em Laughing," a heartwarming drama special based on a true story, to be broadcast Wednesday, April 29 on CBS-TV. Thum, along with his wife, Shirlee (Anne Jackson), took in and cared for some 37 orphaned or rejected children while resolutely refusinR any government aid. Director Jackie Cooper and Rooney, both child ac tors, were reunited on the drama. They last worked together in 1935, in the movie "The Devil Is a Sissy." Concerned Rooney's concern for older people doesn't diminish his love for kids. He has 10 of his own, rang ing in age from 34 to 11. He also is the proud- grand father of three. Watching him off-camera in his color- ful clown costume, hugging, Mickey Rooney kissing and performing various tricks for the little ones, one is touched by his warmth. But what about the peo pie over 45? "The disease we all suffer from is a disease called loneliness," said Rooney. "What I want my project to do is bring people closer together, rather than separate them. I am trying to repeal the words 'senior citizen.' This designation is decadent and effete, and, it makes people think older citizens are on the other side of the moon. 'Experienced People' is what the members in my project will be called." Rooney is excited and determined to make his "big project" a reality. It is in its final planning stages, and, according to the energetic actor, will offer many advan tages. "We are a bunch of human beings trying to live our lives in dignity and respect," Rooney added. "I would love to hear all 'experienced people' someday say, 'I am creating because my incentive is back.'" Mickey Rooney doesn't have to worry about ever los ing his own incentive or creativity. Anyone who has work ed with him, or enjoyed watching him perform during his long career, can attest to that. Anyway, for one of those 'experienced people,' himself, he's still just a kid.
