Hal Williams finds character in a variety of roles by Aphrodite Jones Hal Williams, the by-the-book army sergeant in the movie "Private Benjamin," has reprised his role as drill instructor Sgt Ted Ross in CBS-TV's mid-season replacement sitcom. Williams is hopeful that "Private Benjamin" will be picked up after the four-week trial run. If it is picked up, "Private Benjamin" will be on the fall line-up next season.* Thus far this season, Hal has been seen as Harley Foster, the congenial, hard-working auto mechanic in "The Waltons," and, simultaneously, as the flappable Officer Smitty, straight man to Redd Foxx in "Sanford" and "Sanford and Son." In previous seasons, Williams was a regular on the series, "On the Rocks," had a recurring role in "Harry 0," and played Aleck Haley, Alex's grandfather, in "Root's II: The Next Genera tion." He has also appeared on "Gunsmoke," "Kung-Fu," "Knots Landing" and "The Jeffersons." Exactly what Williams will be doing on the tube next season is up in the air since "Sanford and Son" has been dropped, "Private Benjamin" has yet to be renewed, and the return of "The Waltons" is not definite. With "The Waltons" in trmbo, there is talk of doing a spinoff--"Young Waltons," but it is not known if there will be a call for Williams' part. In the meantime, Hal is filming "The Protectors," a two- hour movie pilot, about life on a police force, to be shown later this year. "I think the key to success is versatility," claims Williams, "I like to mix it up ... I want people to recognize that I can never be labeled." Hal insists, "I would never want to do only one thing. I never want to work in just one medium. I don't want to count my npney and do three movies all year. I don't like to sit around. I like to perform." ' He continues, "I'll do almost anything to work.
