/ Chess Tourney Winners Mark Wedell, left, presents awards to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in the first annual GeiilcmOUrilament at t®le McHenry library. They are Rob Stewart, Ed Swlatek and Jeff STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD There were three winners at a local chess tournament tor Junior high and high school students held at McHenry Public library, Rob Stewart, Ed Swiatek and Jeff Gealow. The tournament was jointly organized by Dolores Rogers, the children's librarian, and Mark Wedell, a student at East campus who also works at the library. With more than twenty competitors taking part, Mark drew up an elimination competition which was very closely fought right down to the wire. Top spot went to a young contender from James C. Bush school in Johnsburg, Rob Stewart. Rob, who is 10, has been playing chess since he started second grade. He was very proud to win a wooden chess set in his first tournament. Ed Swiatek of McHenry high school East campus, took second place, receiving a copy of Athletic Sports and Recreation as his prize. Ed also enjoys archery. The third place winner, Jeff Gealow, an eighth grader at Parkland school, received a cash prize of $5. Jeffs other hobbies include skiing. He has been playing chess for 2 years. Mrs. Stuart, McHenry librarian, said the tourney was organized in celebration of National Library week but because of a busy schedule it was held at another time.
