Mother's Day Rose Sale Choir Performs For 'Jolly Golden Agers The Jolly Golden Agers bowlers enjoyed a delicious, catered banquet Wednesday; April 29, which was arranged by the Giel's. Following dinner, a most outstanding program was given by the West campus Swing choir, under the direction of John Leighty. Everyone enjoyed the program and gave the choir a standing ovation. Eighty members of the group attended the event and all received a prize The Giel's expressed their pleasure that the banquet was such a success and all had a good time. The summer season for the Jolly Golden Agers will begin Monday, May 18, at 12 30 p.m., at the Palace Lanes. Route 31, near Johrisburg road. Anyone in the area fifty years old or older is invited io join, it is not necessary to be a good bowler, and even if one has never rolled a ball he or she is welcome to come and share in the good times. Jennifer Hoffmann hands a rose to her grandmother, Mrs. Alice Sullivan, assistant director of McHenry Birthright, while her mother, Mrs. Alice Hoffmann looks on. Birthright of McHenry county will hold its fourth annual Mother's Day rose sale this weekend. May 9 and 10. at area churches. Volunteers hope to sell 3,500 fresh cut red roses at Bir­ thright's largest fundraising event of the year. The sale will begin at the following churches after Saturday evening services and will continue through Sunday morning: St. Patrick's and St. Mary's churches in McHenry; St. John the Baptist church in Johnsburg; Christ the King church in Wonder Lake; and St: Peter's church in Spring Grove. Also, Alliance church in McHenry will sell them after Sunday worship at 11 a m and 7 p.m McHenry Birthright is the local chapter of an in­ ternational organization offering free emergency service to pregnant women. It is a volunteer, non- sectarian and non-profit organization located at Whispering Point center on Crystal Lake road in McHenry Its philosophy is based on the notion that every pregnant woman has the right to give birth and every child has the right to be born Mrs Tina Gorski. director of McHenry Birthright, stated that since January calls to the Birthright hotline have increased significantly over those of the same period last year Also, over the past months, more than two dozen babies have been born to women with whom volunteers had been working. "We always have a wide range of callers." Mrs Gorski said, •but with current economic problems more and more calls are coming from married women Our supplies, such as cribs and baby clothing, have been depleted. especially with four different multiple births. As always, maternity clothing ap­ propriate for the season is in demand " "We try always to give immediate help to troubled pregnant women in need so that by the time her child is born, the mother can con­ tinue on her own two feet, a mature and responsible person." Mrs. Gorski ex­ plained "Because of our con­ tinued growth in McHenry county we do need volun­ teers. but not just for the hotline, but for giving rides to girls who have no tran­ sportation. I am grateful to the women who have stayed faithfully with us the past few years, as well as to those who have joined more recently." she said. Stanek, recently presented officers of Xi Kappa Iota chapter a proclamation which he had signed, designating April 30, the date of the group's fif­ tieth anniversary, as "Beta Sigma Phi Day". The McHenry and Crystal Lake chapters celebrated the occasion at a dinner held in a nearby restaurant. Members also sent letters to congressmen, urging support of the House' Joint Resolution 128, presented by congresswoman Marjorie S. Holt (Maryland), who is a Beta Sigma Phi In­ ternational honorary member. The resolution reads: Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the President is authorized and requested to issue an­ nually a proclamation designating the seven-day period commencing April 30 of each year as "National Beta Sigma Phi Week", and calling upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe that week with appropriate ceremonies and activities to recognize the National Beta Sigma Phi sorority and its social, cultural and service programs and the high ideals for which the sorority stands.
