Aug 6, with the parade of winners and the selection of 4-H king and queen Cite To 11 way Safety Capt. Hugh S McGinley, commander of the Illinois State police District 15, which covers the Illinois Toliway system, said motorists are much safer when they are riding the tolllway than any other major highway or turnpike in the nation "The fatality rate on the Illinois toliway is 0.6 deaths per one hundred million vehicle miles traveled as opposed to the 1.2 deaths per one hundred million vehicle miles, traveled on other major highways and turn pikes in the United States," McGinley said. •> . TTiere are many safety features employed in the engineering and con struction of the tollroad it self. Some of them are: Breakaway light poles and signs; the use of crash cushions and water filled containers, called hydro- cells, as barriers to prevent serious injury accidents; reflectorized Jane dividers that illuminate the laned sections of the roadway; a concrete center divider that when struck will guide a vehicle back to the roadway, avoiding headon accidents; alert strips cut into the roadway to warn drivers that a toll booth is ahead; the use of skid resistant asphalt at the approach to the toll plazas; and a well staffed maintenance crew 24 hours a day to warn of lane closures or accidents. The 143 state troopers assigned to patrol the toliway is the largest district in the State of Illinois. One of their many duties is the inspection and monitoring of nuclear and ha^rdous materials being shipped across country via the tollroad. State troopers also rendered more than 2,000 assists to motorists stranded by mechanical failure on the toliway. "We are proud to say that the Illinois Tollway~system is one of the most patrolled and safest the country?"*' fttc added Hold First Board Meeting The first village board meeting for May was held Tuesday. May 12, at 8 p.m., at the beach house. Another large audience was present. It's nice to see concerned citizens at the meetings. One of the main topics discussed was Spring cleanup. I know many of us have been waiting for this. Well, it is scheduled to start Monday. June 1, at the west end of the village. The crew will pick up your materials at the roadside. Areas of the village not completed on Monday will be picked up on succeeding days until the entire village has been covered. Flyers will be handed out with further information. Gene Frost has been our Civil Defense Director and will remain so. About the ten-day grace period that was discussed at the meeting, research shows that the grace period is for the dog ordinance and not the vehicle ordinance. This means that village stickers must be purchased and displayed by March 31 or you may receive a ticket. LOST AND FOUND It has been reported that a camera was found on Or chard drive. Scott Brough The Coalition for Political Honesty has begun a year long petition drive for the Illinois Initiative, a con stitutional amendment to permit voters to pass statewide laws by petition and binding referendum "The people of our state are far ahead of politicians when it comes to demanding reform and the Illinois Initiative will give voters the opportunity to vote directly on important issues." said Patrick Quinn. Coalition spokesman With the initiative power. Illinois citizens will be able to petition for binding statewide referendums on key subjects like tax relief, ethics reform. tran sportation policy, and education The Coalitiprftmust collect 252.000 signatijres by May 2, 1982, to place the Illinois Initiative proposal on the ballot as a constitutional amendment referendum Last November Coalition volunteers organized the successful referendum campaign for the Cutback amendment which0 reduced the size of the Illinois House by one-third Quinn said the Coalition's initiative proposal was drafted by top constitutional lawyers and is modeled after s u c c e s s f u l i n i t i a t i v e provisions in other state constitutions. Under the Illinois Initiative, citizens would be a b l e t o p e t i t i o n t h e legislature to enact a proposed law by collecting about 200,000 petition signatures I f t h e c i t i z e n p e t i t i o n proposal is enacted by the legislature and signed bv the governor, it would become law But if the citizen proposal is rejected by legislators or t h e g o v e r n o r . t h e n proposition would be sub mitted to a vote of the people at the next general election for their majority approval or rejection The Initiative amendment also gives the legislature the option of putting its own ey needed for the eveping. k, religious and other activities. 3 1 A WEEK al SUPER SPECIALS/ //AM+SAH S0*W6TTf DfAJAMTft U mn MCATSAOCS t 99* m 3 EGGS SkjniasDiMsr ami 3EU.Y BUf0N£...G€T DUE FCEf! -HOMEMADE SISOIITS tRXKOMVV " »«S5&»r99* N0MWMDV SOG. mmtcuut.io l/mieGER-HDrUX'TACD! 95* X sbapboo • V f A L IASA6HA VBHMMtf 'VHL *2* 16 DELICIOUS SANDWICH SELECTIONS SimiNG AT 75* tLZBAHT BOOTH < 7*8LB UAHMG FOR.
