K£EP r.tv CLtm Chicago Transit Authority Chairman Eugene M. Barnes has finally relinquished wage data of CTA employees, according to Sen. Jack Schaffer. R- Crystal Lake. Schaffer and 37 other lawmakers recently wrote the CTA director requesting the salaries. "The salary figures reveal just what we had an ticipated," the 33rd district lawmaker said "In formation supplied to us shows bus~ drivers and nearly all other CTA em ployees making enormous salaries Two bus drivers made over $50,000 last year while a considerable number made $40,000 to $50,000. It is impossible to justify these salaries." Schaffer noted that for about one year he has art- tempted to obtain definitive salary data from the RTA, which would shed light on RTA bailout proposals Schaffer had earlier in troduced a bill in the Illinois Senate which would require the CTA to release wage information on its em ployees Senate Bill 507 would have forced the CTA to disclose employee salaries including base pay and overtime. "We are in the midst of a massive RTA crisis." Schaffer explained. "One reason we are balking at a new revenue source for transportation is because of the huge salaries of RTA and CTA employees Data submitted by Barnes revealed that of 7.711 rapid transit drivers and bus drivers, more than 6,500 made over $20,000 last year, 589 received between $30,000 and $40,000 and 32 received more than $40,000. Of the 342 mechanics and machinists employed by the CTA. 139 received salaries last year totalling more than $30,000 and of 76 iron workers, 60 were paid bet ween $30,000 and $50,000. In addition, CTA equip ment movers and truck drivers made an average of $25,000. with 16 of those employees making over $30,000. The veteran lawmaker outlined his financial bailout plan for the RTA: -a freeze on salaries over $25,000. -a substantial share of CTA costs paid for by Chicago. -a suburban mass transit district for interested collar counties -an option for collar counties to break away from the RTA and form their own transportation system. "Areas like McHenry, Kane and Lake counties may be better off to get out of the RTA and create their own systems. Schaffer added.
