The play developed on a ground ball to second baseman Gary Freund. Rain halted the game as Doherty's was ahead 8-3. The game was replayed in full Wednesday night and Doherty's won the game 11-9. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Never Say Never Athletics have a funny way to measure success. To the baseball player success is a .300 season, to the run ning back it means gaining 1000 yards, to the basketball coach it's a 20-win season. Sports is a numbers game. The fanatic, the announcer, and the casual enthusiast are all engulfed with everything from the players height and weight, his jersey number, his career marks, and how he did yesterday. Success is derived from these statistics. Statistics serve as the judge and jury in determining me fate of a player for the next year. No doubt professional sports has its idols who seldom stray from the top: Bjorn Borg, Pete Rose, Abdul-Jabbar, and Tom Landry to name a few. Their records speak for themselves and they'll always be remembered as being among the very best in their fields. "Cause I got a peaceful easy feeling that you won't let me down" -Eagles Terry Fox never played a professional sport, but his achievements also speak for themselves. He found success to rest within his own ambitions and desires as he defied a physical handicap that would have humbled and confined others. Cancer had forced the amputation of his right leg in 1977, but the Canadian refused to allow society to pity him. He pushed forward, seeking new challenges and never looking back. He had been awarded the country's highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada. Fox set out to jog from one end of his country to the other last September, a feat never attempted before by an amputee and probably never even considered. "I am a rock I am an island, and a rock feels no pain and an island never cries" -Simon and Garfunkel But this was to be Fox's last race. After he began his trans continental conquest, he was readmitted to a hospital because the cancer had spread. He died there last Sunday, age 22. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau ordered flags lowered to half staff throughout the country. Bullpen By Carl Moesche Yanks, Astros Top Minis The Yanks took over*first place in the American League of the Mini Division of the McHenry Junior Youth League by winning two games last week. They opened with a close 4- 1 victory over the previous first place Cubs. Winning Yank pitcher Brandon Pasternok allowed only four hits while striking out 13 batters. The Yanks scored all of their runs in the fourth inning with key base hits coining off the bats of Joe Kimerk and Shannon Dean. The Yanks other victory was a 16-1 drubbing of the Twins. The Sox kept pace in the American League by also beating the Cubs 7-1 behind pitcher Matt Hopp who gave up only four hits and struck out 13. The big blow of the eme was a grand slam me run by Matt Carlson in a six-run second inning. Kelly Roach and Dave Cable each went two for two for the Cubs. The Astros shufbut the Brewers 12-0 behing Brian Condon's three-hit, 12-strike out performance. Matt Karls led the winners as he reached base four times and scored twice, while Jeff Lundy and Tom Brefeld also scored twice. Jeff Carl and Mark Sonnichson played nifty defense for the Brewers. The Tigers and the Indians played to a 6-6 deadlock, the second tie game of the year. The Tiger's Terry Trocki singled in Jason Eckert in the bottom of the fifth inning for the tie. Ricky Stark lea the Tigers as he went two for two. The Tigers also won 19-7 over the Twins as relief pitcher Ryan Huinker hit a grand slam home run and Mike Lazer and Steve Aleckson were both perfect at the plate going four for four. The Twins were led by Brian Withrow's home run and triple and Mike Ballstaedt's scoring. The Dodgers pulled out a narrow 8-7 win over the Braves holding on in the last of the fifth inning for the victory. Great fielding plays by Craig Shaw and Brett Newbrough preserved the game. Danny Sweetwood's double and triple and Dave Martin's two hits led the winners, and four pitcher§- Sweetwood, Neworough, Scott Johnson, and Jacob Schlender combined to pitch a one-hitter. Jamie Franklin hit a triple to lead the Braves. The Pirates got back on the winning track with a 11-5 decision over the Giants. Robert DiCianni was the winning pitcher striking out eight batters in the three inning game. The offense was led by Aaron Bennett, Jesse Sawyer, Mike Kent, and Keith Rogers. In another game this week, the Braves outdueled the Twins 10-6. FRONT ST., McHENRY Don Prazak had one of his finest days at the plate as he hit three home runs, went four for four and drove in five runs leading Wayne's to a 14-8 victory over Huemann's in Men's 12-inch 'Softball. Prazak now leads (he league with an 'impressive .760 batting average and he also takes the lead in runs scored with 18 and RBIs with 23. Wayne's, who continue to lead the Eastern Division with a 7-1 mark, scored runs in each of the first five innings as they pounded out 18 hits. Tom Prudden added three hit*, including a pair of doubles and three RBIs to the winners cause. Scott Stull and Tom Burke had two hits each. Huemann's had 15 hits led by Ken Bottari's two singles, sacrifice and three RBIs. *Peamiriates Joe Huemann, Guk Weber, Tom Wensch and Mike Wines all added two hits each, while Bud Smith had two RBIs with a single and a pair of sacrifice flies. In the fifth inning, Huemann's closed the gap to 12-8, scoring three runs. The score might have been closer, however, except for the two runners nabbed trying for extra bases. Tom Wensch's leadoff single followed i»y an outfield throwing error caused him to try for second where Tom Moore threw him out. Frank Cuda was gunned down at the plate by Don Prazak as he tried to score from second I believe a lesson can be learned from this. Fox's death need not be in vain, but rather serve as an inspiration towards others. Success can be measured by perserveranee and courage, qualities he clearly exhibited. For if a person has a positive approach to life, it can be anything but unsuccessful. "This is for all the lonely people thinking that life has passed them by, don't give up until you drink from the silver cup, you never know until you try" -America on Joe Huemann's single.
