Illinois 385-4600 If you look out on a large, empty tract of land or perhaps a sprawling, scruffy lawn, you might want to consider convert ing the unsightly space into a useful, safe, grassy recreation field for family and friends. Whether you're starting from scratch or renovating an exist ing lawn, you must prepare the terrain. Here is a basic checklist to keep in mind: test soil; remove debris; eliminate weeds and un wanted growth; rough-grade the site and aerate, if necessary; add a balanced fertilizer and lime or sulfur, as required; thoroughly blend in any needed .soil amend ments; seed; lightly roll; and es tablish a good watering system. As your lawn is intended for heavy use, you will need a hardy grass seed. To determine the best mixture for your lawn, consult a local Extension Office agent, nursery or any of the fine regionalized books on the sub ject, such as Ortho's "All About Lawns." Though spring feels like the best time to plant your lawn, except for some of the heat-lov- ing grasses of the South and California, late summer or early autumn is far better. Weeds of fer less competition, the heat is less intense and it will take less prolonged watering to sprout the seeds. Also, the fall fertilization will keep the grass dense and growing into cold weather, making it more cold-resistant. The lawn will store food, pro moting a strong start the follow ing spring. Proper fertilization is one of the most essential elements in developing a healthy lawn. Each 1,000 square feet will usu ally take between 5 and 10 pounds of dry lawn food, in ac cordance with bag directions. For large areas like a tough play-lawn, dry fertilizer is the most cost-effective. Though, in theory, you can spread dry fertilizer by hand, it requires a talented touch and a great deal of time. The easiest and most efficient way of doing the job is with a pull spreader that connects either to a garden tractor or self-propelled lawn mower. A new item on the market, with a 55-pound hopper capac ity, is Ortho's Tractor Pull Spreader, which offers the spe cial added feature of doubling as a seed and rock salt spreader. A broadcast spreader that is ab solutely rust and corrosion proof, it also has the largest gear in the field and requires no maintenance. A broadcast spreader distrib utes fertilizer pellets over a wide swath, thereby decreasing the number of passes required to cover the lawn area. Before you start, set your me tering pattern and then visually check how wide a throw there is on your first pass to ensure that there will be no gaps in subse quent passes or that they do not substantially overlap. The best technique for apply ing lawn food is to cover the ends of the field first, then go back and forth lengthwise. To prevent double feeding, shut the spreader off as you near end strips. Keep the spreader closed while turning, stopping or back ing up. Clean up any extra fer tilizer dropped and wash away the residue. Once you've worked the fer tilizer into the ground, you're ready to spread the grass seed. , Follow the instructions on the package for the number of pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet for bare spots and apply a quarter of that amount for sparse cover. Apply a thin layer of mulching ana lightly roll. Finally, water thoroughly af ter sowing and then lightly sprinkle as many as three to four times a day until the young grass is established. After it it established, you should nor mally maintain a spring/fall feeding pattern. RIVERSIDE HEARING AID SERVICE i 3 2 0 N .
