\ Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 9, 1932) Mayor Knox and the members of the City Council have won their way to the hearts of the women of McHenry in their ordinance regarding solicitors which is published in this issue. For many months the women, also the business men of this city, have been pestered with solicitors, agents and beggars selling everything from a hairpin to a swindle scheme of magazine sub scriptions. According to the ordinance the agents and solicitors must obtain a permit from Marshal Walsh, countersigned by Mayor Knox, and when a stranger appears at your door do not hesitate to ask to see their permit, und if they have none, they should be reported at once. Algonquin is again the champion of the McHenry County Junior baseball league, sponsored by the American Legion. This is the third successive year they have held the title and the second that they have defeated McHenry in the playoff. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 10, 1941) In the midst of a busy session of the City Council, the annual appropriation ordinance was passed, makingi provisions for construction under the streets and alleys section of $15,000. This was explained by the council as a protective measure in case of the necessity of replacing the old Green street bridge and widening the street at that point. This appropriation was not to be misunderstood or confused with the tax levy ordinance since the amount of levy for such purposes will not approach the ap propriation A favorable report was received on the condition of records as kept by the city treasurer, collector and clerk. The McHenry band will give its firs^ concert of the season at the city park. The 24-pfefcd >band will-again be conducted this year by Walter N. Sears, one of the best directors in this part of the country. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of July 12, 1956) The highest position ever gained by a McHenry boy at Legion Boys State was claimed by Karl Tomm, local high school senior, when he attended the week's session in Springfield in June. Among 1,350 youths in attendance he was one of seven to hold state office. Karl was elected to the office of superintendent of public instruction. Brother Paul, the former LeRoy Bauer, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Bauer ( of Ingleside, recently enroute to Tanganyika territory, Africa, to begin his mission work. Brother Paul is a member of the Society of the Divine Savior of St. Nazianz, Wis. Mary Lu Delmonte, a vivacious teenager with a roguish sparkle in her eyes, gets the greatest chance of her young career as one of the principals in Walt Disney's live-action production for his Mickey Mouse club soles, "The Dairy Story". TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 14, 1971) The city of McHenry will receive 16,449.50 as its share of the state distribution of $11,234,673.34 to counties and municipalities as their share of last month's state income tax collections. Based on population, McHenry's allocation was third. Legal fees in the amount of $2,517 for services of At torney Sheldon Karon in connection with the zoning question t at McHenry Country club were approved at the last regular meeting of the City Council.
