PAOC 23 in the spotlight im "As You Like It" offers a taste of comedy and romance An odd and assorted cast of characters, banished by whim and fortune to the Forest of Arden, are joined together in the charming play "As You Like It," to be rebroadcast Monday, July 13, over PBS as part of "The Shakespeare Plays" on Great Performances in July. The production stars Helen Mirren (pictured) in the delightful role of Rosalind with Brian Stirner as the love-smitten Orlando. Also featured are Richard Pasco, Angharad Rees and James Bolam. It follows the confused course of love, longing, tom-foolery and wit for which Shakespeare's romantic comedies are famous.* Taped entirely on location at Glamis Castle, Scotland, and directed by Basil Coleman, the play is at once a high pastoral comedy and a satire on the form. "As You Like It" utilizes the familiar woman-disguised-as- a-man ruse to make many cogent--and contem porary--points about the roles of the sexes. Helen Mir ren, in the leading role of Rosalind, explains: "This is a play that keeps changing its meaning. They had a heyday with it in the sixties, playing the peo ple in the Forest as hippies, with flowers in their hair, liv ing in geodesic domes and getting back to nature. Before that, they were played as sort of Robin Hood and his Merry Men-type characters. I'm sure they're not go ing to mean anything like that to the next generation. It'll be something completely different." "As You Like It," which had its original airing in February, 1979, is a BBC-TV and Time-Life Television co-production, presented for the Public Broadcasting Service by WNET/THIRTEEN, New York. It is made possible by grants from Exxon Corporation, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, with additional support from local public television stations. Executive producer was Cedric Messina, Alan Shallcross was script editor and Dr. John Wilders of Oxford served as literary consultant. 'CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TIME.
