TELE Pulse Tinker-ing with NBC by Steve K. Watz /Vefr York-- Fred Silverman's demise at NBC should not be perceived as a total defeat for the once magical prime-time programmer. As previously reported by several industry observers; Fred inherited an inept pro­ gramming department that had already made com­ mitments for series which bit the dust after four weeks. Fred had to literally start from scratch and beckoned for his young programming whiz, Brandon Tartikoff, to help him whip the moulting peacock's evening fare into a competitive force. Silverman was also shackled with the responsibility of trying to rebuild the network's daytime, late night-and news departments as well--which was a task in itself. By trying to rebuild everything at once, and having to deal with RCA's finicky board members and stockholders, Fred literally burned himself out. His resignation came at a time when victory was oh- so-close. The prime-time ratings began to stabilize a bit, the news department began to show signs of a Phoenix­ like comeback and daytime was being reworked. Whither Brandon? Fred's bold prediction of NBC atop the prime-time throne last Christmas might have been his Waterloo. In this respect, Brandon Tartikoff also let his mentor down. To wit, Brandon unabashedly stated last January that he would work closely with Johnny Carson Produc­ tions' development of new series and tele-pics for the network. To date, Carson Productions has given NBC the worst mini-series of the year--"The Starmaker" --and a failed fall '81 series in the "Angie Dickinson Show." Brandon's fall schedule was supposed to be a breakthrough for the network, but his approach to developing series around established stars, without the benefit of a cohesive pilot, brought nothing but snickers from many NBC affiliates and the advertising communi­ ty. In his defense, there are som$?solid programs in that schedule, but Tartikoff's positioning of those shows was a bit weak, so Fred had to take the heat for it. Thornton Bradshaw, the new titular head of RCA, NBC's parent company has appointed Grant Tinker, a former NBC employee, who has an untarnished reputa­ tion as a producer ("Hill Street Blues," "WKRP," "Lou Grant"). Grant should immediately revamp the fall schedule by pulling those series projects which need qualitative upgrading (there are at least three I could name but won't) and immediately plunge into some competitive bidding for major theatrical releases. NBC's theatrical movie lineup for next season is exceptionally weak. The only area Grant need not touch is the made- for-TV flicks department (remember "Shogun"?). The network has an excellent array of tele-pics for next season, some of which have series potential. Mr. Tinker will need lots of luck to pull NBC out of its doldrums and the only way he can get the job done is if the boys at RCA stay out of his way. Good luck, Grant.
