The follow ing are trade tips offered by award-winning designer Janet Rosenberg, design-efficiency consultant to Minnetonka: • Clear the Room--Remove all loose items and evaluate the basics. What fixtures or appli ances must you work around? • Establish a Goal--How much of a change do you want to make? Decide how much or how little you want to spend. • Be Patient--Designing takes time. Shop supermarkets, drug stores, hardware and de partment stores for new prod ucts that are functional as well as esthetic. Change the knobs on cabinets and you've changed the mood. Softsoap's decorator packaging eliminates a messy soap dish. A grouping of inexpensive framed minors are wonderfully effec tive. • Add Color--A little bit goes a long way in small spaces. Use solid-colored instead of pat terned towels; semi- or high- gloss paint instead of patterned wallpaper. Before buying any wallpaper, get a large sample and live with it awhile to avoid an expensive mistake. • Focus on Lighting -- Soften the effect with incandes cent rather than fluorescent lamps when possible. An energy-saving dimmer switch changes the entire character of the space for under $10. Lighting is a very important feature of design--it shows off what you've just created.
