The action took place Saturday at Peterson STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Sport Stop Wins 16" Tourney By winning five con secutive games, John's Sport Stop captured first place in the V.F.W 16-inch softbail tournament last weekend. Sixteen teams participated in the double elimination tournament which was held at Peterson park. In the championship game, Sport Stop won 12-6 over Hiller and Hamm, winners of the loser's bracket Winning pitcher Rick Herdliska helped himelf with a perfect four for four game as did teammate Paul McVickers. Mark Malof and Mike Weber added three for four performances. For the tournament, Sport Stop displayed strong hitting as six batters hit .600 or better Herdliska led the team with a .740 mark and was followed by Malof, McVickers, and Don Houghton who all batted .667. Larry Turner and Bill Mevelle chipped in with averages of .610. In their first two rounds, Sport Stop encountered little trouble walloping Palace Bowl in the first round Friday night 25-10 and smothering Something Good 20-8 on Saturday night. On Sunday, Sport Stop blasted Doherty's 14-4 and then got by Nancy's Tavern 13-9 before winning over Hiller in the finale. Astros Win Title The Astros, winners of the American League title, defeated the National League champion Cubs 6-3 to win the Johnsburg Little League crown. The two-mile run will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the eight-mile run at 9 a.m. Both races will start and end at the West Pavilion in Woodstock City Park on West South street. Each course will have mile markers, split times and aid stations. There will be eight age divisions for men and women in each run plus a whelchair and blind division. The age divisions will be: 11 and under, 12-15, 16-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over. Grand prize trophies will be given to the men's and women's overall winer in each run. Olympic size medals with neck ribbon will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division in each run. All runners will receive a souvenir T-shirt. Also, fruit drink and watermelon will be provided afte the race. A registration fee will be charged. Runners can register the day of the race from 7-8:30 a.m. Net proceeds will be donated to a local charity. Entry forms are available at the Daily Sentinel, 109 S. With their backs against the wall, Hiller won six straight games to earn the right to play Sport Stop. They first shutout the Teenage All Stars 19-0, then defeated J and L10-2, Smoke House 19-10, and then the rematch with 3D-Bowl 12-4. Doherty's next fell victim 14-9 which gave them fourth place. In the semi-finals, Nancy's Tavern finished in third place after Hiller beat them 6-2. Pony Stars Win Tourney A team of All Stars from the Pony Division of the McHenry Pigtail League captured first place in a 12- inch double elimination softbail tournament held in Woodstock. The girls Won four gtmight games along the wqy to winning the title. In the first game, Cissy Pinkstaff pitched shutout ball as the AH Stars breezed past a Johnsburg team 13-0. In game two they defeated Woodstock 13-8, then downed Marengo 9-6. Facing Marengo in the final, McHenry won a close game 7-6 as Michele Ken nedy tripled home Greta Larsen with the winning run. He had a perfect game going until he walked a batter with one out in the sixth inning. He retired the next two hitters in order, however, to record his 6-0 game. In other games, The Cardinals behind John Margraffs hitting topped Hansen Decorating 9-6. Brian Toussaint led the Bluebirds past the Owls 16-6 as he was perfect at three for three. The Eagles won a see-saw game over the Hawks 14-13, and the Ravens got by the Condors 10-5. Mike Rogers and Jeff Meddings were the heroes as both singled with two outs to bring in the winning runs. Both teams enjoyed slim leads during the contest with Wayne's taking the early lead on Tom Burke's solo home run in the first. Mike Rogers tied the score in the bottom half of the inning when he doubled and scored on Matt Oik's single. In the third Oik drove in another two runs with a home run to centerfield to give Doherty's their first lead. Irish DeCiccio scored in the same inning on a four base error and the score stood at 4-1. Wayne Roewer led off for Wayne's with a long home run to left in the fourth. Kevin Horner and George Cadotte teamed up for another run with base hits and Doherty's lead was cut to one run. In the sixth inning Wayne's first baseman Kevin Horner scored to tie the contest. After a base hit, Horner moved to second on a walk, to third on an infield error and reached home on Rich Kuchera's fielder's choice. In the bottom of the sixth Doherty's Irish DeCiccio reached third base as Wayne's right fielder miscalculated Where the ball was going to land. Randy Vauk followed with a triple to score DeCiccio and put Doherty's up by 5-4. Mike Peterson next hit a grounder to Kevin Horner who stepped on first and then threw to Wayne Roewer to nab Vauk at home in a doubleplay. Wayne's flexed their muscles in the seventh with Don Prazak, Tom Burke and Pat Burke slamming back to back home runs. Doherty's put a halt to Wayne's rally but they still trailed 7-5. In the last of the seventh Tom Roach and Steve Mai both singled with one out. However, Jim Wayman popped up for the second out. Mike Rogers kept the game allVe by hitting a single to left. Roach scored and then a bad throw on the same play allowed Mai to tie the con test. Rogers reached second base on the throw. There were still two outs when Jeff Meddings hit a single up the middle to drive in Rogers with the winning run. Both teams had 14 hits with Wayne's slamming five home runs out of the ball park. It was very frustrating for Ken Prazak's crew, however, as each homer was hit wothout anyone on base. Defeinsively Terry Hovseth made two excellent throws to second base to cut down Women's 16" Softball Ed's Rental won its eleventh straight game in Tuesday night McHenry women's 16-inch softbail by beating Sunnyside 7-1. Ed's scored what proved to be the winning run in the second inning as Linda Schoen's sacrifice fly brought home two runs. Three more runs scored in the third frame as Sharon Smith, Cathy Boro, and Diane Michels collected run- scoring singles. Ed's concluded its scoring in the fifth inning when Michels belted a two-run home run. Second place Gearmaster won 8-1 over N and R after giving up the lone run in the first frame. A big four-run fourth in ning put the game away for Gearmaster. Third place Four Winds had little trouble with Dr. Frymark crushing them 23-3 invoking the 15-run slaughter rule. Home run power paved the way to victory as Chris Tokarz collected two, while Carrie Waddington and Bonnie Irwin had one each. Tammy Kinder added a triple to the cause as did winning pitcher Becky Brefeld. Sharal Koenigseder was the big gun for the winners with a home run and a triple driving in four runs. She broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a three-run home run and she tripled in the final run in the fifth frame. Diane Gundlach's triple and Mary Martin's home run accounted for the five other Old Bridge runs that scored in the fourth inning. Brake Parts edged River Shannon 4-2 rallying from a 2-1 deficit in the final inning. Mary Mclnerney started the rally with a double and then scored the tying run on a base hit by Dorothy Kupstis. With two outs, Kupstis scored the winning run when Cheri Kolfer beat out an infield hit. Bernie Shaver then followed by singling in an insurance run. In another game, McHenry Dental Center banged out 18 hits en route to a 15-4 victory over Fritz- che's. Doherty's runners who had tagged up and tired to ad vance after flyouts. Randy Knipfel led the winners with four hits and four RBIs including a pair of doubles. Chuck Marke, Dave Oeffling and Bill Roarke had three hits each with Marke driving in three runs and hitting a pair of doubles. John Walkington, Randy Schultz, Dan Brenner, Bob Helfand and Tim Whitman all had two hits in the rout. Guy Weber, Frank Cuda and Pete Merkel had two hits each ofr Huemann's.
