In retrospect, Axelson said she was "Very surprised" when she was crowned as queen, and she recalls being "absolutely petrified" at the Miss McHenry County pageant and each preceding contest as well as the pageant downstate. To whomever is crowned Miss McHenry County for 1981, Axelson offers this advice: "Just enjoy your reign. It'll be an experience you'll never forget." Juanita Leanna Ritzert, whom Axelson crowned as Miss Woodstock and Miss McHenry County, echoed the sentiment of her predecessor. "Make the most of every day," she advised the future queen. "It's something you'll remember for the rest of your life." Ritzert also agreed the pageant helped her to gain poise and self- confidence. "I seally learned a lot, too," she added. "Before the pageant, I had no idea how much work actually goes into the fair, and how hard the participants work." Today Ritzert is a nurse at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, and she and her husband, Robert, who is en> ployed by Kelsey WeldifSgTjave one daughter. f "I still look forward to the pageant every year," Ritzert said. "I get real excited when I see the girls on the stage, and I know just how and what they are feeling."
