Livestock auction a fair highlight Shaw Medio News Service McHENRY -- One of the biggest attractions for fair-goers and par ticipants alike is the annual livestock auction held at the McHenry County Fair. According to Edwin J. Becker Jr. of the McHenry State Bank, the 1980 fair auction boasted the sale of 83 sheep, 79 beef and 131 hogs. Becker noted that the livestock buyers corne from a wide range of backgrounds and occupations as well as from all over the county and the Mid west. V. Some mammoth companies, like Union Carbide, make it a point to purchase animals at the county fair auction for the public relations value. Realtors, financial institutions, construction firms, veterinarians, farm machinery dealers, state senators and just plain folk all have been included on the rolls of purchasers at the county fair. The people who purchase the animals keep them for personal use or donate them to different organizations. "Last year, Congressman (Robert) McClory donated his animal to the buyer's appreciation dinner," Becker said. Becker said that the various show entrants pay a good deal of money to buy a potential prize-winning animal and then must raise and groom the animal for the show. "The cost of buying and raising the animal is usually more than is realized at the auction," Becker said. For this reason, he added, the auction boosters pay a premium to offset the cost to the contestants. The auction is limited to those people who have officially exhibited during the fair and each exhibitor is allowed to sell one market beef, three sheep or two hogs. The McHenry State Bank has acted as the collector and disbursor of funds for the last 10 years. "SEE YOU AT THE FAIR!" STOP IN AND VISIT WITH US AT OUR BOOTH AT THE FAIR.
