Government budget cutting and an intensifying cost-con- sciousness on the part of both business and industry have put people out of work and brought on a fierce competition for any and every job that becomes available. Workers of all ages are caught in the squeeze, so everyone has a small share of the discomfort. But, as always, bad times hurts most of all those who are most financially vulnerable--meaning, of course, the retired and the elderly. When times are good, neither business nor industry hesitate to new employees. If the pro fits are there, the independent store owner will pay for part- time help in order to have a lit tle time off. Let things toughen up and he goes back to a full- time schedule and the part-time worker goes home. Many re tirees who have relied on part- time employment are now find ing that the jobs just aren't there, for the most part, and that there is competition from younger workers for the few that may be available. There is no doubt, most econ omists say, that the economy is improving and will continue to improve, to a degree. But, it will be a long time before we return to a situation where jobs are looking for people, to a time when those who want to work only part of the time can pick and choose to come up with the kind of a job they want and do it on the days it suits them to work. All of this indicates a press ing need for shoring up of the Social Security System. What ever needs to be done should be done to provide some kind of a viable program that will provide security to those Ameri cans who have earned it and at the same time present to those active workers (who are con tributing more than ever be fore) much-needed evidence that they are investing in their own future. Patient Father -Yes, my iust one mi Soj^^-^iVeU/men, how is it that while night t falls, day breaks? Calling CoUeen Dear Colleen: My mother and father are divorced. Dad left home 13 years ago, when I was only an infant. We never heard from him until recently, when he just appeared, unannounced. He and mother seem to have picked up right where they left off. He doesn't live with us, but he is here all the time. They are talking about getting married again. 1 don't know why, but I resent the idea very much. Dad doesn't have a job, and I just don't think I would like for him to be around here all the time, day and night. I'm sorry I feel this way, because mother seems happier than she has been in years. Am I wrong, or am I selfish? Jealous Dear Jealous: You may have given yourself the right name--jealous--but -.v.. ' only you can determine why you feel the way you do. Think it out. In so doing, consider the fact that your mother deserves a share of happiness if it is to be found in re-marriage. If it means a little sacrifice on your part, it may prove to be worth it. You may well find some new happiness, too, in a family life that you have not before ex perienced. Dear Colleen: Given the choice, would you choose between the guy who drives a flashy new car or a much-better-looking guy who doesn't even own a bicycle? Puzzled Dear Puzzled: I would not choose either one on the basis of what he has or does nof have in the way pi worldly possessions. Character and personality count with me. /
