Roots In Discovery At The McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society George Farrel of Gary wilf be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the M c H e n r y C o u n t y Genealogical society to be held Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at McHenry library. Farrell, an experienced genealogist and historian, will speak on the migration patterns of the early settlers of this nation. He will start with the early immigrants and the reasons behind why they immigrated to this country; what nationalities settled in what parts of the country's coastline areas; and continuing on with the branching out of those early settlements, to the other states and territories, as land became available. The talk and discussion later will help other family history researchers have a better understanding of what caused the immigrations and migrations. It will also help the researcher to know what clues to look for and as a result be more successful in directing their own per­ sonal family research. According to one soci€ member, Phyllis Bauer McHenry, being familiar j with the nation's history is a very important part of any hopeful genealogist's background. It's been a sur­ prise to a number of researchers to find their ancestors mentioned in old county books or state history books, as an early settler or early church member. It's not necessary to have famous ancestry to find them mentioned in one of these old books. Genealogy or "family tree" as some prefer n call it, is like the study of a mystery. Clues are looked for and when found, are compared to other known facts to see if they "fit" the story. The more a resear­ cher knows about the background of the characters in that "mystery" the easier it is to fit the clues together and come up with answers. Riverside drive, McHenry, said the T-shirts would be available in a number of McHenry business establishments on Aug. 10. Otto said the response of the business community in supporting the Vietnam veterans has been gratifying and also noted support from both the V.F.W. and the American Legion posts in McHenry. The distinctive shirts with the eagle emblem are ex­ clusively endorsed by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial fund sponsoring committee, which includes such notables as former President Gerald Focd, Bob Hope, James Stewart and Rocky Bleier, to name a few. Otto said the United States Congress has already set aside a plot of land near the Lincoln memorial, if the memorial .is built with private funds. "If it was bought by thf vets alone, it could not be built," Otto said. "We are counting on the support of the American public." Otto added that those closely involved with the project hope to have the memorial completed in the fall of 1982. An Elgin businessman and St. Charles resident, William Gibson, came up with the idea to do something for the Vietnam veterans after seeing the warm reception the American hostages in bran received. Seventy-five cents from the sale of each shirt is st£t to the memorial fund uid another $.25 is donated to the National League of Famtite of American Prisonen Missing in Southeast Asia. The total FY 1962 grants to community colleges will be distributed as follows: Credit hour grants- $116,002,500; disadvantaged student grants~$5,000,000; and equalization grants- $23,561,700. McHenry County college will receive $1,121,991 m credit hour grants and $27,971 in disadvantaged student grants for a total of $1,149,962 for the 1962 fiscal year. The total grants will be divided into four equal payments and distributed to August, 1981, November, February, 1962, and May, 1962. Illinois Community college board Executive Director David R. Pierce says, "We feel these funds will greatly assist the 52 public com­ munity colleges in con­ tinuing to provide out­ standing educational ser­ vices to the citizens of Illinois." Pierce also stated, "The community college system sincerely ap­ preciates the support of Governor Thompson and the Legislature in a time when the state's fiscal resources are severely limited."
