ROCK ON E The VHtage People (left to right) David Hodo, Felipe Rose, Jefl Olson, Ray Simpson, Alex Briley, Glenn Hughes. by EthHe Ann Vara INTERVIEW The Village People, who sold 18 million albums worldwide in the guise of 'motorcycle cop,' 'construction Worker,' 'cowboy' et. al., have become themat- ically as unemployed as the rest of us. Producer Jacques Morali has recostumed them in the European-flavored New Ro mantic look, and the new album is--hold your breath-- not disco. "Well, you can call it dance music or whatever you like," says Ray Simpson, who is lead singer, ex-'policeman' and in cidentally--brother of Valerie (Ashford and) Simpson. "It's a fine line between what is disco and what isn't." "We didn't want to be labeled forever as a novelty act," says Glenn Hughes, previously the black-leather-clad fellow. "We wanted to prove there was more to us, but I don't think the old image will ever die." The old image was something else again. The Male Myth, gift- wrapped and videotaped. "We were outrageous, but not offensively so," says Hughes. "People could laugh at us; we never tried to ram anything down anyone's throat." "Everything we did, some people always tried to make it into something heavier," says Simpson. "They tried to read so much into our lyrics. We've always been about having a good time. We're just enter tainers having a good time and bringing a little lightness and fun to people." Into this fun and light comes Jeff Olson, the new boy. Dis covered fashion modeling in Paris, he replaced the earlier cowboy just in time to be stripped of his buckskins and put in face-paint and powder. "I'm pretty sure that this will become a fad in America," he says, "and that the Village Peo ple will be credited with spearheading the new look." Olson auditioned for Jacques Morali under the impression that a new VP-like band was go ing to be formed. He was flab bergasted when he discovered that the gig was with the originals. "This is a lifelong dream for me, and I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life." Morali seems to have made everyone happy, despite the fact that he is, admittedly, dif ficult to work with. Demanding. A perfectionist. But hey, if it works ... His most notable flop, "Can't Stop the Music," was still a box-office bonanza in Europe. According to Glenn Hughes, foreign distributors cut all footage except that of the VP's. In Germany, the film ran 43 minutes. One cannot talk about the Village People without mention ing (or at least whispering--the Moral Majority might be eavesdropping) the word 'gay.' Their camp image preceded them like a headlight. "Why do people always ask that?" sighs Ray Simpson. "I don't know why*it's that impor tant Usually I would say that what you do sexually is nobody's business, but lately I've gotten fed up and say 'Hey, I'm straighf and it's neither here nor there but if it makes somebody happy to know that, I really couldn't care less.". "We're entertainers," stress es Hughes. "Singers-dancers. We work hard. And the people out there justify our existence." The Village People are cur rently touring Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Their new a'bum, "Renaissance," is avail able on RCA Records. TV OOMMJIOO SCRVICtS.
